Kitchen Gardeners

I'm wondering how to get to specific categories? There has to be an easier way to navigate to "Growing Tomatoes' or 'Food Preservation', but I can't figure out how it works.

And how do you view a comment to your profile? I must say this interface is absolutely unintuitive and awful, too bad, because it should be such a great forum and community to follow....I just don't have the time to deal with it. Does anyone read or respond to these questions?????

What do you mean by "categories"? Our discussions aren't indexed, which would help immensely, but have you gone to the forum and done a "search" in the search box provided? It doesn't bring up just discussions, but also all comments made with the search terms. By the way, we have a group specific to growing tomatoes, and one for the preservation of food. Have you looked through the groups yet to find these or others that might interest you?

What do you mean by "view a comment to your profile?" Comments left on your page are readily viewable. Do you mean how do you leave a comment on someone else's page? Click on their ID picture to go to their page and then scroll down until you see the comment box.

I don't know what websites you've been on before, but the KGI website is the most user-friendly site I've ever been on. Several computer programmers have commented to me how incredibly easy this website is to navigate compared to all others. That's ALL others.

As the membership grows, and discussions and blogs multiply, tracing a topic becomes slightly laborious, but not impossible. Part of the problem is multiple discussions on the same topic. Just the other day I found 5 discussions on one topic all begun within a week of each other. People join and start discussions, and even start groups, without checking to see if those topics or groups are already active. People join, and are too busy to get to know the site or ask questions about its use before they start publicly complaining about it.

Plenty of our members have little or no computer experience when they join, and they've expressed delight in how easy this website is to use. Where else can you have your own page, with your own blogs, and post hundreds of photographs, and thousands of comments on other people's pages, photos, discussions, and blogs all in one place? Where else can you find someone else with an answer to your question that you don't have to wait days for? People who are interested enough to do research and help someone on this site find the answers they need?

Where else can someone post a discussion that blows chunks all over this site and still get respectable responses?

I am the forum administrator on a Pilates forum, and a moderator on a whole group of forums from Backyard Chickens through The Easy Garden, as well as a long time participant on many, many other forums, Beemaster, Beesource, etc. I am very well versed in software platforums for communication. All of the forums mentioned use much easier to navigate forum software such as Simple Machines, IPBoard, or paid platforms like V-Bulletin. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, it wasn't my intention, but I truly can't logically navigate anything here with regards to the forums.

If I go to posts I've made here, for example, this one, there's a line just underneath my topic 'How to (sic - I mistyped when I first posted, oops!) you get to a 'category'?' that says 'Posted by Ann Rein on June 23, 2009 at 5:13 pm in KGI member and supporter feedback, the last part is underlined as it's a hyperlink to the category 'KGI member and supporter feedback'. So there is a category that's associated with this thread. I wanted to get to that 'category'. That's the way most forum software is set up. It's not a matter of me not wanting to learn, there just doesn't seem to be any organization to learn.

That's is the problem you are experiencing with multiple postings of the same topics. There is no order, so how do you expect people to keep order? Again, I didn't mean to hurt you, but you have a great set of people here, and lots of good info, you really should consider going to a better platform for your discussion forums. Many are free, Simple Machines is a nice one, there are others.

As for viewing a comment in my profile, under Latest Activity, I'm told Drue McClure has left a comment on my profile on Monday. Drue McClure is hyperlinked but it goes to an "I'm sorry, this page can't be found", and if I click on my profile, which is also hyperlinked, I'm tossed to my profile. I have no idea where to read Drue's comment, it is not on my page.

There are other sites that have interesting people and discussions, I like to belong to many, to keep learning and sharing. I don't hate it here at all, but it's very frustrating, and I thought this was the proper place to get info and figure out how to make it less frustrating.

Take care,

Ann

Hi Ann,
I think he Dru Mclure thing was a spam hit that got caught before everyone had the occasion to deal with it. Ian's pretty good about that.
I got the comment from him? her? too and got the same result as you.

As for your frustration with the site... spend a little time, join some groups and you'll probably like it more.

BTW, what was the category you were searching for?

and by the way -- welcome to KGI!

Dru was a spammer who was immediately banned and deleted from this website. That's why when you click on his name you are sent elsewhere.

I think your problem is that you are so tuned to the way the other sites work, you subconsciously expect this site to conform to the same operational standards. It doesn't. It won't. Your frustration is in that you expect it to.

Ian is our website administrator. He usually greets new members and lets them know the basics. I suppose he has been busy with his own garden and hasn't had a chance yet. But it's up to all of us to greet new members, and most ask questions and get quick responses.

You might be over-thinking how this site works. Open your mind, and think more simply about this site. It isn't complicated at all. If you have questions, ask, but don't be so insulting. You didn't hurt my feelings, but your attitude about this terrific, family-style website angered me enough to respond.

Hi, I'm the site administrator.

I've looked at this discussion and have decided to change the page under the "FORUM" tab so that it will show "categories". All discussion are categorised so that should help with all sorts of searches. Please bear with me for a day or two just in case I hit any problems.

As for viewing a comment on your profile.... they just appear in the comment wall, on your home page. Hit the tab "My Page" and then scroll down to the bottom to find the comment wall

I'm also sorry, Ann, that I haven't been in contact. My life has been very busy over the past month or so and I have also created a large garden which is in it's first year right now and taking a lot of controlling. I'm hoping to be able to serve you all much better again in the near future.

Thank you so much, Ian, for your responses and believe you me, I can understand chaos in your personal life, mine is filled with drama right now, too....and also a large garden I've been developing since the whole yard-changing experience of a septic install! Thank you for the easy access to categories, I think the change will make it easier for others navigate the site, too. I know how changing things can be challenging, I hope all goes well in the process.

Edited to add: I've just checked out the change, it looks great! Thanx again!

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.

Hi Everyone,  I've started to collect together recipes from various posts on the site and put them all together here.

If you have a recipe you want to add on here, just post it on the site and leave a comment on my page telling me where it is and I'll go and fetch it back here.

They are organised in Contributor Order but I'm open to better suggestions!
