I'm with Sara! It's not so bad gardening here in New England. It was my first summer gardening (adventures online at my blog Seeds & String), and I had some success! I also really enjoy/rely upon Damrosh's Garden Primer. Highly recommended.

I don't know much about cold frames, but I do want to learn more, so my farmer sister signed me up for this meet-up, called: A Hands-On Lasagna Mulching, Raised Bed, and Cold Frame Construction Workshop. Maybe see you there, and best of luck!

Hi Stephanie, it's not as bad as you think--also from what I understand in SF you can't really grow tomatoes easily for lack of sun--that works out well here. I think the key is starting seeds indoors or just buying transplants. There's all this stuff out therea bout cold frames and what not. I'm a total novice myself so that's in the long term for me but right now I need to figure out the basics. The Eliot Coleman/Barbara Damrosch books are raelly inspiring for what you can do out here, and they are in even colder Maine!

Hey fellow members, I'm new to the Boston area, or to any cold climate are in general. I moved out here from Berkeley CA where I had a garden, I'm going to need a lot of advice about how to plant in places where it actually (heaven forbid!) frosts over.

Hopefully that's the last of it. I left all my containers outside last night for the first time. I'm nervous about the temps today and keeping up the watering however!

I think I lost my basil when we had the low temps Monday night. I knew I should have brought it in but I guess I was in denial. It looks droopy & leaves are yellowish. Beautiful day today!!!

Yay, finally a group for my area!! Thanks Sara! I've planted lettuce, radishes, spinach, garlic, broccoli, peas & snow peas. Can't wait for warmer weather to put my tomatoes out.

I thought it might be nice for Boston area people to have a group to discuss what grows well here and local events of interest!

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
