Saw Joe Salatin speak at CC Comm College the other night. Terriffic speaker and hugely entertaining. He runs Polyface farm in VA which was featured in Omnivore's Dilemma. Check out http://www.polyfacefarms.com/
Not much on veggies but he sure has a well thought out and elegant system.

Summer summary?? Yikes, pretty bad. Indoor tomatoes (via earthboxes) are still producing nicely. And we have lots of indoor basil as well. I think the outdoor garden gets a D+. Good lettuce, fair raspberrys, poor tomatoes, squash and cukes. Eggplants = total wipeout.

Late Blight?? Not sure I have it yet but tomatoes are so far behind it might not matter. Water bill will be zero this summer if the rains continue.

Its official June was "Dark, cool and rainy. 20% less sloar radiation than average (in fact barely more than the minimum for June set in 1982), 1" more rain than normal, 3 degF below normal air temp" Source: WHOI Falmouth Monthly Climate Records http://cis.whoi.edu/science/PO/climate/index.cfm

We are close to setting a record for the darkest June on record! My Solar Hot Water is about the same as air temp. -shessh!
So far no slug problems but the black plastic may be helping with that. Lettuce seems fine.

strawberries and lettuce coming in during a remarkably overcast may and june.

So far I have tomatoes (plum and regular) in, lots of lettuce (from sets), a couple of summer squash, and some cukes. Hope to plant the rest this weekend. Most of last weekend was lost to graduation activities, :) , but my daughter helped some speading the black plastic, etc.
Need to start watering again as not much rain for a week or two.

Hi Mike There is nothing tastier than fresh pulled carrots. Of any vegetable i think there is the biggest difference between shop bought carrots and home grown carrots.

Hi Amna My garlic is now over hand high as well. I planted it a bit earlier than normal this year, but it seems to have appreciated it. I,m looking forward to some large bulbs next year. I hope your foggy weather has now cleared!

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
