Has anybody tried Malabar Spinach? I'm growing the red stemmed variety.
Its a twining vine. It has a slightly oily texture, like okra. Its best eaten raw.

I use the vines in the potted plant arrangements I do. In fact, some rooted into the ground from hanging over the pot and are doing fine. I will try next Spring.

Rose, that's to bad, cause they are easy to grow and have a lovely vine......which reminds me I have to take a picture of mine. What if you start the plant in a green house to give it a jump start. Thanks for the tip on Jicama leaves, never seen the plant, but I do enjoy jicama salad.

Letti, Thanks for the info. I think I looked into this years ago and abandoned the idea because we don't get hot enough. I know the vine is lovely. We can't grow Jicama either. Jicama leaves turn out to be a natural insecticide; rotenone.

Hi everyone,
Rose, I plant sweet pototoes in may in S.C., so their no chance of frost. The only problem I have are deer, they love sweet pototoes as much as I do. You can eat the leaves wilted in a frying pan with salt & pepper also. Good Iuck.

Rose, check out the local extension office in your area, there you can find how and when to plant sweet potatoes. According to the information I got for my area I planted mine late July. They are about 3 inches high and doing well.
You can also search 'growing sweet potatoes in Santa Barbara', or visit a nursery in your area and ask. Good luck. I find sweet potatoes are easy to grow, once I had a bit of information about when, how and where to grow them.

when i moved to the south i was disappointed with the sandy soil in my yard. but after my first winter i was happy to know that i can grow year round. i have started collards, radish, beets and carrots for the fall...........with a little planning i can grow then all through the winter and early spring.

I love kohlrabi, beets and radish! Kohlrabi is so interesting to watch grow and its good to plant it between carrots as they grow in opposite directions.
Beets I love to harvest the tops as the root grows. Radishes are so quick its amazing!

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
