I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

This ant problem was addressed elsewhere somewhere on this site... hmmm what was the answer, does anyone know?
Joy Williams Comment by Joy Williams on May 19, 2009 at 3:32pm
coffee grounds and oyster shells ARE working to repel the slugs!

I was turning over some soil in my garden this morning and ANTS! EVERYWHERE! I don't want a nest in my veggies, I'm not going to use chemicals around my food, so I don't know what to do to get rid of them. Any ideas?

That's true about the copper, like salt, it makes them sizzle.
Heather WOod Comment by Heather WOod on April 1, 2009 at 12:11pm
I just read that slugs dont like copper or they won't cross copper!

Hi Joy. Belated thanks for the invite to join. This is a great topic! Look forward to the conversation (though not to the pests! :-)

I have slugs to deal with too... LOTS of them. I use Sluggo, but it never feels like they really go away because of it.

Has anyone ever dealt with cutworms? They devastated my garden two years ago, and that's the one I'm gonna try and do my real strong tomato patch in. I'm thinking of solarizing it with black plastic. Any ideas, people?
Pema Comment by Pema on March 17, 2009 at 6:21pm
Thanks for the invite Joy. I mostly have slugs, white fly and aphids to deal with. I had been saving crushed egg shells to give calcium to my plants so now I'll do an slug prevention test and put it on top of the soil. As for the beer--my only results was 'drunken slugs' slithering away.

One of my favorite books...I think I actually recommended that to you. They did start in the spring and I'm thinking that would be the right time for where we live. And it gives me extra time to do research about local resources.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
