Kitchen Garden Communicators Unite!

Michael Pollan ends his latest book "In Defense of Food" by urging people to "cook and plant a garden". This message is more timely than ever and we can help spread it in our own communications work. Please use this group for sharing your creative thoughts and ideas on spreading the word about home gardening and cooking.

Hi, everybody! When I decided that I wanted to be more active in spreading the word about growing food, I joined the local Master Gardeners group since it has an education mission. This turned out to be a perfect fit for me.

I have worked with a few school groups that were beginning food gardens, I volunteer regularly at a Plant-A-Row-for-the-Hungry garden, and I get to talk about food gardening A Lot. I am already signed up to give two veggie-gardening talks in March.

In addition, a year and a half ago I started a garden-focused blog. It gets some readers, but I have no idea how many. Every now and then I will be talking with someone new about gardening and the blog comes up, and it turns out that the person already reads my blog! Always a surprise.

Also, I met Kate Copsey, host of two gardening shows on Radio Sandy Springs, through the Atlanta Seed Savers group here, and I've been a guest on her show (thanks, Kate! I love to talk about growing food).

Before starting to work actively toward helping people with their food gardens, I talked with quite a few neighbors about it. My garden is in the front yard, where it is visible to the world. The corn is usually a bit of a traffic stopper, so just gardening where everyone can see was a good start toward talking with more people about growing food.

I am interested to know how other people got started and how else they are working toward helping people with food gardening. I hope more people here will post their stories!

Joy, thanks for the video post. It was fun to see it again. hat garden is going strong. The parents and teachers are more involved. The school lost some of its grant funding so they are working extra hard to find help.

Yes, Joy - I welcome gardeners from all over - if 10am is too early for west coasters then I do pretape a few. Today I have Rose Marie Nichols McGee and in 2 wks Renee Shepherd will be on. We also have regular gardeners, community gardeners (hopefully next week it will be Fiskars who sponsor community gardens) and farm market gardeners too. Great variety and good fun from my side of the mic! Send suggestions to me at ktcopsey@aol.com
Thanks
Kate

Do you want to talk to gardeners on your show? I'm an alpaca rancher in CA, and would be happy to chat up about what I'm doing sustainably on our cooperative.

Good morning everyone from sunny Atlanta, GA!. I am the host of America's Home Grown Veggie Show on www.americaswebradio,com (also Radio Sandy Springs) which airs every Saturday at 10am (eastern) . We have great guests, including list owner Roger, who was the guest for the July 4th show. You can find that show in the archives of www.radiosandysprings.com.
We are always looking for ways to increase listeners, so ideas are welcome!!

Helen Cook Comment by Helen Cook on July 27, 2009 at 3:51am
Hi all - it's great to find a group of like-minded people. I also have just written a book. It's "Get Growing" and is a guide to getting started written for New Zealand children and their grown-ups. However, I'm sure the basics of growing are universal - just the seasons are upside down.
When I set out I wanted to help keep alive the practical skills, language and sheer pleasure of growing your own vegetables and fruit - all things that are in danger of being lost in supermarket aisles. I was really inspired by Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemna. What a great book!
Look love to share tales with other writers.

Thought this was interesting: "Why Non-Profits Are So Good at Social Media" by Harvard Business Review

I am working really hard to determine the best ways to shape and share our message/voice in the dialogue about local food / childhood obesity & wellness / pedagogy in non-classroom based environments / community farms and farm gardens.

I would love any insight, information, or resources that people can share.
Thank you,
Brooke

Our ABC affiliate news station in Sacaramento, CA just had our company on the evening news. Teaching adults and children about organic, edible gardening is very hot in our local area. We have seen a big increase in our class sizes, our organic seedling sales and our consultation and design business.
Here is a link to the news piece that was filmed at a local school where we teach.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
