Monadnock Community Gardening and Seed Saving Initiative

If you live in the Monadnock Area, and want to grow your own vegetables or have been doing so forever, join us!

Location: Monadnock Region, New Hampshire
Members: 26
Latest Activity: Aug 21

Please join us and spread the word to gardeners and would-be gardeners you know. We are a community of people who like to share ideas and advice about growing vegetables, saving seeds, and everything related. We also plan to organize meetings, events and monthly speakers. If you know of any resources or events of interest to this community, please post a message with all the details.

Tell us what you are growing this year and post a comment. Have too many cucumber seedlings? Let us know! Is an unknown bug eating your beans? Take a digital picture of it and share it: one of us will surely know which bugs are eating your veggies and even give you a remedy to change their minds. Are you planning to grow veggies for the first time? Maybe you'll find someone in your neighborhood who is willing to invite you in his/her garden and introduce you to this wonderful hobby. Want to discuss how to extend our short growing season or which tomatoes taste best? Go right ahead and start a discussion below.
Want to connect with gardeners or seed savers around the world? Check out the other groups or sign up for the Kitchen Gardeners monthly newsletter.

As a community member you can do all this and so much more, and it is free to you and free of adds. Happy gardening!!

Organizers for Post Oil Solutions (POS) Regional Food Sustainability Campaign have begun to investigate the possibility of creating a Regional Food Center. POS is holding meetings to share its current thinking about the Center, and to solicit input from interested parties.
As it is presently envisioned, a Regional Food Center would include a retail market and cafe featuring locally-produced food. It would also include a licensed industrial community kitchen that could be used by farmers to make value-added products, by local citizens to do canning and other food preservation, and for workshops. Other possibilities for a Food Center (which might include a network of buildings) could be a storage facility for farmers, a composting center, and a processing center for grains and oil.
TriVillage Energy, Walpole’s energy committee, is hosting an information and listening session with POS about the Regional Food Center at the Walpole Town Library (at 48 Main St.) on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to come help envision the future of food in our area.
Post Oil Solutions (www.postoilsolutions.org) is working to increase community self-sufficiency for a post-petroleum society. The Regional Food Sustainability Campaign works to increase our ability to feed ourselves with locally-produced food.
For more information about the Regional Food Center, or Post Oil Solutions, email foodhub@postoilsolutions.org or call 802-869-2141. For information about the meeting in Walpole, or TriVillage Energy, email info@trivillageenergy.org or call 603-756-3168.

Phew! I am very happy to say I'm a proud first-time father of two Buff Orpingtons, two Sexlinks, one Bardrock, and two chicks of some other species I can identify (my wife did the ordering). We've had a blast watching them grow and adopting new behavior. One thing we've learned is that if one chick finds an object or activity cool, they all want in immediately.

But after four weeks I am waay ready to get these birds out of the house. They got huge -- and fast.

That was Then:

This is Now:

A co-worker of mine at Keene State College built us this coop and is placing the finishing touches on now. If you're in the market for a coop, this is the man you want to build it.

This one was $500.

One of my Stevia plants went to seed over this past winter. I think Stevia is notoriously hard to germinate. If anyone wants to give it a try, I'll be happy to share some seeds. Pick up in Walpole only.

Hi all, I just joined this group and wanted to say hello. I garden in Walpole and work with TriVillage Energy and its Local Food Subgroup. I notice that in a strange twist of serendipity, the moon is right for planting above ground annuals Friday afternoon (2:47) through Sunday noonish (11:43), just when the weather is predicted to be glorious! Yippee!

Has anyone else considered living by a 100-mile diet (only eating foods grown/raised within 100 miles of your house)? I just listened to a really amazing podcast on a couple from Vancouver, BC who did it for a year and am inspired to try it myself...

I think one major thing to consider when gardening on your flat roof top or balcony, is the weight of the pots/compost and the strength of the structure you are placing them on.

Hi Gillian I totally agree about the sweet potato leaves. I thought they were great to eat as well.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
