I live in Olympia and am starting my winter garden seeds now. The kale are out in the bed but I have brussel spouts, parsnips, spinach starts under the lamp. My tomatoes are just beginning to be ripe this week. Lojo

Hey PiscesGirl,
I feel your pain!
I just finished planting the veggie garden and sat in the house tonight and listened to the rain storm.
I hope not everything got washed away!
The beans I transplanted three weeks ago haven't moved an inch...just waiting for some stable weather.

Having the dickens of a time getting my garden started this year. The 'maters have been killed off twice. :( It is mid-May and it feels like mid-March! The only things doing well in my yard & garden this year so far are strawberries, potatoes, cilantro (oddly enough) and cippolini onions. My peppers, tomatoes and peas are all struggling. When will summer actually start this year?!?

I am going to focus on preserving food this season...so I'm talking to the Hubs about getting an additional freezer. What other ways do you all preserve food, fruit, herbs etc.

Hi Kimberly Ann!
I think raised beds are great.Just remember that each plant has different requirements. For example, peas are a cool season crop and grow best until temps get really hot, however corn LOVES the heat!
Also plant your corn in blocks, not rows...it helps the small corn patch with pollination! Maybe the corn bed should be deeper too.
Good luck!

I'm a gardening noob and could really use some advice on the best way to start a small backyard garden for onions, garlic, peas and corn. My yard faces east and is currently still a slab of grass. Would a raised bed be the best method? Thanks!

So beautiful this morning, then I ran outside, trowel in hand and it was 37 degrees!!! I came back in and had some coffee. As a Seattle Native I get kind of ichy complaining about the weather...but....I can't wait for spring to really start!
Leeks, onions and broccoli raab and artichokes from last year are the only things in the veggie garden right now. However, I did notice buds on all the fruit trees and the raspberries. Also the rhubarb patch is showing signs of life. I guess there are signs of spring, I just would love to get everything started.
I lost the glass top to my cold frame (cracked and broke under the snow). So I need to replace that. Then I can put some things out there to start.
I'm going to take my coffee outside and walk around. During this time of year, I spend a lot of time staring stuff.

Onions and leeks and nothing else! Waiting about 3 more weeks to plant starters. Seems.....so.....cold......right now! I've been following this blog and trying to figure out when the last frost is going to be: http://www.valeaston.com/

Hi, Heather!
Thanks for starting this forum for all us Puget Sound kitchen gardeners. I have some pictures of my garden and greenhouse on my page. Snow's gone (for now!) but it's still drippy. I did manage to get the peas planted and got as far as making the bed to plant out the onions I started from seed in January, but then it started to drop snow pellets on my head. What do you have in your garden now?

I have seen the really young kale leaves in salad mixes, but I prefer it cooked. Unlike collards and mustards, that need several hard freezes to sweeten up, kale does not. But at the same time it is the most cold hardy of all the greens. Last year...

Hi shery, The reason farmer put thing in the cellar was it stayed 55-60 degrees year around & a dry cool mostly. The best thing is to store any veggies where air can circulate. One way is to build a 2"x4" frame with cross runner every 24", you can...

I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

Bees and other creatures pollinate our crops. Birds and toads eat insect pests. Many animals play a helpful role in the vegetable garden. How can we make our garden friends feel at home?

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!
