Do three things to increase yields: 1. Increase organic matter in the soil. 2. Repeat 1 3. Repeat 1. Use green manure/cover crops. Use organic, no-till in permanent beds. No work gardening aka Ruth Stout. Info from minifarms@gmail.com.

The cukes are big enough. The prickly things will just sort of brush off after a bit.
Robin Stevens Comment by Robin Stevens on August 12, 2009 at 8:29pm
I don't know if this is the right place for this comment, but what are the prickly things on the cucumbers. Clearly I've never grown cucumbers before, but I am now! And they're starting to get big. But they have prickly things... so does that just mean they're not ready? Thanks!

I'm very happy with the results of the SFG method in my 4 x 8 planting beds.

We were too brave when we planted the pumpkin along the vertical trellis netting. Now we have giant pumpkins pulling very hard on the netting. Probably a smaller variety of pumpkin would have worked better.

Q: What inexpensive materials are people using for mulching?
Joy Williams Comment by Joy Williams on June 9, 2009 at 9:18pm
you put it around the base of the plant. then just water it... it will seep in.
Robin Stevens Comment by Robin Stevens on June 9, 2009 at 9:12pm
Thank you Joy! Do you put the coffee grounds around the base of the tomato plant or mix it into the soil around the base? I think the grounds will help.
Joy Williams Comment by Joy Williams on June 9, 2009 at 8:02pm
oh you might try adding some coffee grounds. Yellow leaves also indicate a loss of nitrogen. Coffee grounds are slow release nitrogen.
Joy Williams Comment by Joy Williams on June 9, 2009 at 8:01pm
no problem, Jessica. My pleasure.
Jessica Anderson Comment by Jessica Anderson on June 9, 2009 at 7:58pm
Thanks for the tip about over waterin tomatoes Joy! I was wondering why I had a few yellow leaves.
Joy Williams Comment by Joy Williams on June 8, 2009 at 8:40pm
Robin, ok, first, don't water your tomatoes unless you stick your finger in them and they are dry or if they are wilting. Over watering is really bad for tomatoes.. It makes the fruit too watery and could yellow the leaves. Secondly, you need to pinch off your flowers on your basil plants. In fact what I do is when I see leaves grow within two leaves, I pinch those off. That will create two more branches, and bush the plant out. Hope that helps!

Wow, this is great! I'm attempting to garden on a boat (we liveaboard in the summer) and I was thinking of doing something like this on a small skiff next to it...Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
