Still in the researching stage. How much pasture do chickens need if exclusively fed on pasture? I will have a small yard, and don't plan on them visiting neighbors' yards, as the houses are close together.

Hi Lydia
Thanks for your reply. Our cat is not a farm cat but it is not a lap cat either. It is aloof.
I think we will be OK. All i have to do now is to persuade my wife.

Is your cat well domesticated, loving her humans? Then it's no problem. The cat will not hurt living beings fed by her humans. You even can let cat and chicks alone. But not, if the cat is a rather wild farmers' cat! In this case you have to raise your chicks in a cage without any possibility of contact.

Hi Everyone
I,ve been toying with the idea of getting a few chickens, but we have a cat.
The cat used to kill things when it was younger, but has been OK this summer.
Is it a problem to have chickens when you have a cat?

Sandra,

I am glad to hear that life is looking rosey for Rose. I also share your thoughts on using drugs, but sometimes they do help.

Is Rose laying again?

Rose the chicken update:
It's been about three weeks since we started the antibiotics and she seems to be doing great!! Although I'm not a big fan of drugs...I'm glad I decided to do it. She is well on her way to full recovery!

Joy Williams Comment by Joy Williams on September 13, 2009 at 12:58am
here's rawzi's link

That way you can click on it. Why is it so hard for people to use this image to link?

btw, Rawzi, why do you have MY pictures on YOUR page? It's puzzling everyone.

We got our first egg three days ago, and another one yesterday. Tiny dark brown eggs, almost round, and smaller than a golf ball! How exciting to see it start, our own eggs, furthering our self-sufficiency. I hope everyone in this group who has chickens but no eggs yet will soon have this same, wonderful feeling of success, and know that you are making the right choices for your families. Good luck!

Lisa, It is my understanding that the kitchen waste must be covered with bedding (i.e. shredded news paper) to discourage fruit flies. That has worked for me. Are you sure you are seeing fruit flies and not sewer gnats? S/Gnats look like fat fru...

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
