If you do not want to start an indoor worm bin, try putting the vegetable matter in bags and bury them in one spot in the snow, next spring you can add them to your compost bin as the snow melts.
December 10
You might want to consider vermicomposting. My worms do such a good job of keeping up with kitchen scraps that I rarely have anything from the kitchen for the regular compost.
December 10
We start a new compost pile (closer to the back door) in the fall and just keep adding to it, even on top of the snow. If your pile is under a limbed-up evergreen, it doesn't get as much snow on top. Sometimes if it's looking icky we'll cover it wit…

Thanks Glenn and Maxine:: Your suggestions do sound good with a few exceptions... We get a lot of snow - I'm not kidding. The weekend after Thanksgiving we got about a foot, we've had light snowfall ever since and about another foot yesterday. I don…

Hi Angie I think you need a larger collection container outside the back door. With the cold weather this will keep the contents uncomposted until spring, when you can add it to the compost heap with the necessary brown material. The container would…

I don't have alot of snow here in the Seattle area Angie but have various reasons for "pile problems" - 1) didn't want to keep adding raw materials to an existing pile all winter as hoping that pile will be usable next spring. 2) wanted to cover the…

Angie Knost added a discussion to the group COMPOST
So the snow is flying and the compost pile is no longer visible and my bucket on the kitchen counter is full to the brim. I live in northern Vermont, we get a lot of snow and high winds make for some pretty amazing drifts out there, too. What do you…

The caraway beets are great. Got the sunchokes done this morning, now it's the wait. I think they will be very good, though.

Let me know how you go with her sunchoke recipe. As I am in Australia and it's spring, our sunchokes are just starting to sprout so it will be a while before I can try it out. I just made caraway pickled beets from her book and the jars look great.…
November 18
That is my favorite book and I am going to try the recipe you are talking about. Since I did the last post I tried drying some and didn't like the way they came out. As my husband said 'they taste like cardboard!'
November 18
I have a recipe for pickled sunchokes if you would like it. I have never dried them and haven't made this recipe but it is from the book Summer in A Jar by Andrea Chesman and all of her recipes that I have tried are excellent.

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!

My kitchen wouldn't be complete without fresh fruit. The focus of this group will be berrries! What do you grow? Do you have favorite varieties? How do you grow them? Please share your thoughts, comments and pictures!

It was a great article in the NYT, right? It finally inspired me to get the canning equipment I need--and I'm doing a pick your own in a few weeks! Strawberries!

Angie, I see you started your canning group, but you indicate you're focus is on preserving "methods" when I specifically said that's what my group was doing. How should I proceed now?

Hi Angie. What beautiful photos you posted. Is that your farmhouse in the distance? It's beautiful.

As to the groups and repetition... repetition seems to be inevitable here, in discussions and sometimes in groups. It frustrates me, but I'm a bit anal that way. There is no one/no way to monitor it the way the site is set up. I believe we are supposed to police ourselves, but some folks can be a bit touchy about things, and most just seem to ignore some issues.

KGI is growing so quickly and so exponentially, that repetition is bound to happen. There is just too much to sift and sort through any more to find out if our topic of interest is "out there."

The Root Cellar group is supposed to focus on methods of preservation, rather than recipes, even though someone has started adding recipes. And the types of preservation I'd like us to discuss are those other than canning.

I don't think adding a Canning and Preserving Recipes group would be overlap if you specify that your group is recipes. That is what you're going for isn't it? If so, go for it. I will mention, however, that we have a recipe collection under notes and a recipe group. Make sure people understand that yours is for canning and preserving recipes only if that is the case.

Good luck. mwf

I would guess they are related to blackberries. A bit smaller, not quite as many seed and the color is more of a purplish color. I've read that if too close to blackberries they will cross. They grow everywhere down here, road sides, unkept yards, and acreage that hasn't been cleared completely. When I was growing up it was common to see folks on the side of the road picking them. They are great to eat and make a good jam.

The birds love them. I let one large stump just be covered with them and the birds sit up in the middle of all of these vines and eat, sing and recycle.

Hi Angie Knost, Welcome to KGI, I'm sure you'll find the community interesting. The navigation bar at the top will help you find your way around. "My Page" will take you back to your own page on the site. "Events" will take you to an area giving information on upcoming events. "Forum" is where you will find all the discussions that are going on at the moment and "Notes" is where I can write bits and pieces that might be of interest to members. At the moment there is a list of recipes, (Recipes, recipes, recipes) and some other things of interest..

If you would like to suggest anything or there is anythimg I can do to help, then please just leave a comment on my page

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
