I have some raw fleece, Ann, that I'll sell for 10 a lb. How much do you want, and what colors do you crave? I have a number of colors, but each color is of a different quality. Probably my best quality is the color of the guy I have on my website, Culurien (he's really good).

I will be shearing these guys again in June or July, and will have at least one white fleece that I'll be willing to sell a lb of... but that' it, and it won't go for 10 a lb, more like 25 as she's remarkably good quality. (and that's raw, so that should tell you how good it is - her first fleece was better than cashmere - if you close your eyes, you cannot feel a puff of it in your hand!). Normally alpaca fiber goes, after processing and cleaning $40 - $50 a lb, just to give you an idea. Should I take new pictures of all of them so you can choose what color you want if you choose to wait until this batch is sheared? Cuz that's easy to do.

Let me know how much you want to pay for it. And email me your address... I have to be honest, for a whole fleece, the price on the shipping is more expensive than the fleece itself on the average, because the boxes are inordinantly large. I try and suck as much air out of the bags as I can, but unless someone sends me one of those vaccuum storage bags, it's gonna be a lot more expensive than it needs to be. I have to find a way to buy those bags in bulk. So if you can send one of those bags, the shipping will be reduced incredibly. I literally had to charge my last customer three times the cost of the actual lbs of the fleece I was sending her for the shipping because of the size of the boxes. That's ridiculous. So if you can send me one of those bags, it will really help.

In the meantime, I need to look how to get those bags in bulk.... :)

My email is hummingbird@surfnetc.com.

We got about 3" of snow - enough to be pretty and play in, but not enough for a big mess. Wish there were some hills nearby for sledding, tho!
34? That's a lot of litle chickies! Do you have a big coop, or nesting boxes and a larger penned in area? A word of warning (you may already know this) a nearby friend who has a small flock has frequently lamented how much the local racoons seem to like chicken.
Did it snow much for you all?

Nice to "meet" another Virginian. Sorry it took a while to reply - I got sidetracked. I am so excited to get gardening that these 60 degree followed by 30 degree days are really getting to me. You'd think I'd be used to it by now, but I keep telling myself, "April 8, April 8" - the last frost date around here has to inform my garden work. Good look with your colonial-style gardening this year. In your small farm, do you have chickens?

Funny you should ask. I'm going to try it, but cauliflower is not my favorite veggie. I'm hoping the broccoli part of it will make it palatable. :) I'll let you know, If I don't like it, I'll be giving it to folks here on the ranch.

Hi Anne,
In answer to your question about comfrey: Yes it is still used in commercial salves. It has a long history as a medicinal, and until it was found to be a potential carcinogen a lot of people were drinking it in tea as well. (I suspect that a lot of people still are, for that matter.) Come to think of it, I have a lot of info about comfrey -- I'll put an item about it on my blog.

Lisa, It is my understanding that the kitchen waste must be covered with bedding (i.e. shredded news paper) to discourage fruit flies. That has worked for me. Are you sure you are seeing fruit flies and not sewer gnats? S/Gnats look like fat fru...

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
