Early and some into mid-season I found I could cook Scarlett runners just like pole beans even tho they were upwards of 4 inches long. After that the "strings" were too tough, wouldn't pull off and didn't break down with cooking. I chewed on them an…

They really are startlingly pink, aren't they? Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you like your soup to look) the color fades when they get cooked in the soup. But when they're pink like that they're really tender and nice. I always us…

Thanks, Irene. Does it matter that the beans inside the green pods look so darn bright pink? I'd love to use them in soups! And great idea about making a veggie broth out of all the stuff I harvested but maybe shouldn't have!!!

Hi, Annie -- Like you, I've just harvested all my scarlet runners due to impending frost and, like you, I find myself with a big basket of huge beans. Past experience has taught me that the old pods have a tough inner layer that never softens no ma…

Hi all, I harvested (due to possible frost) a LOT of scarlet runner beans, most past the snap stage (they are swollen with beans). Any good ideas for how to use them? Pickling? Are they too big to use as food? If so, do you think they will still dry…

Lucky you! I eat them blanched with butter, pepper and salt. Decadent. Hey, does anyone have any good ideas for what I can do with a lot of scarlet runner beans that are past the snap stage? (are swelling with beans). I should have left them on the…

Good to hear from you! Yes, had plenty of fun this summer.
I don't know about the Runner Beans...wish I could help. I used to grow them as ornamentals.
I still have some tomatoes hanging on, some ripe and tons of green...but I think I'm done...Not a spare inch left in the freezer!

Wow, this is great! I'm attempting to garden on a boat (we liveaboard in the summer) and I was thinking of doing something like this on a small skiff next to it...Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
