greetings Sheryl! this year ended up being a disappointment, mushroom-wise. Got a few dozen buttons, that's all, and I did not see any puffballs up here this year at all. I am sure it was the unusual weather we had this year. I remember when I was g…

Hi Jacki! Oh how I wish I lived in a part of the world where a person can growe olive trees! Sigh... I googled olive trees and found this real interesting and informative bit for you. Go to www.geocities.com/~gianno/angi2.html . The writer is an oli…

sure looks like sumac to me!! Grows like a weed, but can turn into a nice tree if trimmed. Soft wood, loses branches easily. BIRDS LOVE THEM!!!! Sumac are beautiful and I have had a dozen robins at a time in mine in the spring, eatting the red buds.…

Water, water, water, or you will have the smallest spuds in the world!! I have grown potatoes in similar bins and they need lots of water, especially when they are swelling. I do like old galvanised metal containers. I like the way they used to be m…

thank you! It was a cattle feeder or waterer, all rusted out in the bottom so it just sits on the ground and drains. I found it in a ditch, had been there for months and I kept looking at it as I drove by. Finally one day I dragged it out of the wee…

Morels!!!!!!!

Yes, indeed the morels came up again this year, in generally the same locations as the two last springs. What is so wierd is that for 25 years before that, Jim never found morels on his property, and now they are here!! what a thrill!

Leeks

Looking at the newly bared garden, it's nice to see the chives bursting forth, will have to remove some as it is taking up too much room, and I have tons dried and /or in the freezer from last year. There is also a bunch of garlic coming up- I planted them in the fall. I didn't know you could split the garlic toes, kinda like poatoes, until last year, so it will be interesting to see how they do! The only other thing in my garden right now are some leeks. Had never grown them before, and they we… Continue

Our Garden on the Bruce Peninsula, Ontario Canada

Thank goodness winter is almost over!
My hunny, Jim and I have restored his old garden that he let go to ruin for about 10 years. For the past three years we have been trying to figure out what grows for us here. Last year was tough, since we had a very long drought.
So far tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, chives, carrots, green and yellow beans have done well. We grow a small amount of lettuce and cucumbers for the season. Jim likes dilled green tomatoes and beans, so I dont bother with pick… Continue

Wow, this is great! I'm attempting to garden on a boat (we liveaboard in the summer) and I was thinking of doing something like this on a small skiff next to it...Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
