What season is it anyway?

We have been having an odd summer here in Oregon. One day we have hotter than normal weather (last week we had a few days in the high 90's) and the next it is rainy and overcast. Over the weekend we had what I consider perfect weather-mid 80's with clear blue skies. It was beautiful! I wish we could have that kind of weather everyday.

Today, however, it is overcast and misting and feels very much like fall has arrived. There are other signs fall is around the corner-living close to the high sch… Continue

Covert Weeding-Is it crossing a line?

My neighbor's landlord recently visited and sprayed pesticides along his side of the fence, on the property line, and along the front of his yard to kill weeds, leaving unsightly dead weeds, which look even worse in my oppinion. In his attempt to kill the offending dandelions and clovers he killed several California poppies that were on the property line-a favorite of the bumblebees.

I am obsessed with my little garden. I just want more, more, more. We started with blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Then we added another bed of tomatoes, herbs, onions, and peppers. Finally, we added a bed for lettuce, green beans, radishes, and carrots (put carrots and radishes in too late and they didn't do very well). Then I bought a pumpkin and watermelon on a whim and put them in the ground hoping the kids wouldn't step on them (only minor damage so far). This week I added brocc… Continue

Wow! That is a huge potato. Congrats!

I don't know how big of a pot you need. I was going to just buy a pot larger than the one I purchased the tree in-probably an 18-22 in. diameter. Still haven't got one, maybe next year....sigh.

i miss my apples trees, had to say goodbye when we sold our little farm. i'm not in a position to plant fruit trees in the ground, so this sounds like the way to go. what size container do you use?

I wouldn't do covert weeding for the above reasons, and it may not work anyway - the landlord may spray just as a regular 'preventative' so all your good work would go for nothing. Good luck on the environmental approach. I think people who spray th…

I grow basil, flat leaf parsley, cilantro, chives, mint, sage, rosemary, english thyme, lemon thyme, and lavender. I put basil and chives in just about everything. I don't really use the mint, lemon thyme, or lavender much except in iced tea, but I…

Having fresh basil is the best! Now that I have grown my own, I don't know how I would be able to live without it. It tastes so much better than dried basil, or even the refrigerated basil you can buy at the grocery store. It is by far my favorite o…

I would like this group to focus on kitchen herb gardens, be they culinary or medicinal. What do you grow, what do you use it for, do you make any medicinal products from your herbs?

I am not familiar with loquats, but could you pick them and let them finish ripening inside? The carrots are beautiful.

I wish I had your problem-my biggest mistake is not planting enough. I planted one grape tomato plant, one cherry tomato plant, one roma tomato and one big boy and my kids eat every single tomato, sometimes before they are even ripe. I think they ha…

Beautiful! I am a sucker for the decorative bottles of olive oil with peppers, etc. floating in them. I could see hanging these in the kitchen just for decoration, perhaps from a pot rack.

İ like those bottles too and just any blue, green coloured bottles on a window ledge. İ was trying to find some nicer photos for you as İ thought those ones didnt really depict what İ was trying to convey. Yes the local markets and bazaars are that colourful if not more. İ have just moved to another region (thank God) and the markets here are much better ie they are selling large bags of licqorice root fibers that they make a drink out of next to those are large bags of unhusked pistachios next to bags of chillies and next to the shop will be a little man selling mulberry syrup or liquorice drink. Turkey is very interesting so much to see. 8)

The only thing you need to grow an apple arch is patience. Oh & maybe a couple of fruit trees.

Hi Cindy,
I have a lot of help. We shopped this on Wednesday and Thursday, prepped on Thursday and fFiday and finished and presented it on Saturday. This was a wedding for 350 and my personal gardens cannot support that so I utilize the local farmer's market. The pesto, sundried tomatoes for the orzo and the herbs come year round from my gardens and the bulk of what else I personally grow is for my family for inseason and for the winter months. But I do try to add some component of put by produce in every catered event. Thank you for noticing and asking.

Thanks for the comment. I didn't have much choice since the land next to my cabin is a sheer rock wall. I've managed to build up enough soil to plant potatoes (plus the critters don't seem to want to eat the plants). My friend designed and built my floating garden for me and I just love it. - Margy

Thanks for your comments. Aways tray crazy thinks following your intuition and it can give original marvellous results...When climbing in the trees the pumpkins find the sun in the hight and there are less subject to illness ...and it's easy to water them on the base if necessary .You can also increase the density of the plants...But I do it because for me it gives a wild natural aspect on the garden. For the harvest it 's not always easy but it gives my much fun...

Thanks, I love my purple posts, but I think my neighbors think I am crazy.

My cold frames have 3 or 4 windows. So I can open one or all. This keeps them light. To save money I only put one opener per frame. When my kids were little we had a wooden box with a special hinge that kept it from slamming shut on fingers. I think they sell them at places like home depot. I wonder if that would be helpful on your coldframe. Hopefully your won't need to figure out how to keep baseballs from breaking the glazing :)

Tomato seeds, if kept cool and dry can last for many years. I am saving seeds from my biggest tomato from my most productive vine. I will dry them and plant them next spring. You cannot save seeds from hybrids.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
