Cayenne pepper! I'd forgotten about that! I have a bottle that I was going to throw out due to it's age. I'm moving into a guesthouse in the Hollywood Hills that has a LARGE, unused area for me to garden, but my friends that currently live there ...

I said I'd get back to you about netting to keep squirells and birds off tomato plants. I've learned a bit since then. First the netting was wrapped around the cages, 5' tall concrete remesh. This seemed to stop the squirrels from getting into the...

The dogs stalk the squirrels, since the dogs live outside, they get to know where all the squirrel nests are. They often wait by the water trough or patiently stalk them as the squirrels get busy and comfortable in the yard. Dogs are pack hunters,...

Being a STL Cardinals fan (baseball-wise) I always thought they were nice/decent birds. Wrong....Cardinals are VERY aggressive birds....they intimidate all smaller birds and can beat all but a Hawk and I have even seen them chase hawks.

My dogs have slowly killed off all the squirrels on our land. I almost miss the buggers, they can be entertaining in small numbers. Regretfully the dogs won't actually eat the carcasses, and I sometimes only find the 'remains' by smell. ewwww.

Carol, I dont know you,so I can't make any character judgements. Nor would I.But the practice of drowning animals goes against my grain. I guess I'm not ''practical''. have a nice day.

Help I'm being pilaged by the Squirrel Mafia

What am I to do my poor little garden has become a haven for every squirrel in the metro Atlanta Area. They are quite selective because the lone suvivor is the cucumber plant that is blossoming nicely but everything else shows signs of the assault. Anyone with some suggestions to ward off the foe I will greatly appreciate it lest I waste much time and energy and cash this year.

I have a cat that hunts...although mine never came close to catching a squirrel, he sure likes stalking them. Are they getting on your patio? That's bold. Try sprinkling cayenne pepper or hot sauce on the plants ... heard that helps. We southerners always have hot sauce around :)

Welcome Corinthia, to our little nest in the cyber world! I'm not near you, I'm in California, but I would love to hear your stories about your new exploration into gardening! And yes, it's great to move in the direction of sustainability!

Hello Corinthia! What a tropical background to your photo - is that on your patio? I'm also east of Atlanta and happy to see more gardeners around here. Post photos, please!

Another Georgia gardener! Welcome. I live east of Atlanta. I see you're settling in quickly. That's great! Have you considered container gardening on your patio? I have two garden beds on my property, but I also keep a container garden on the front deck. We don't use that deck for entry, so container gardening is a good use for it, and it keeps the plants up and away from the dogs. We have a container gardening group if you're interested (Look for the picture of the horse).

Welcome to KGI, and best gardening wishes! mwf

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
