My father has bought kits for years. His most recent purchase was for something that started with an "s"....I don't remember offhand, as I don't eat mushrooms. ;) He loves 'em. He "plants" leftover kits for use in following years. I don't know about…

Hi Courtney, it's been a while since we've heard from you. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I have been playing the last couple days on my granddaughters' horse site. Bella Sara she adopted a little foal and I promised to take care of it for her because she only comes on the weekends and doesn't have a computer at home. Becky was worried Princess Daisey would get hungry and lonely. sooo I have been having a grand old time in the stables doing horse care and playing games and earning points for her. LOL
My little yorkie sneaked off Sat night to run after a hunting dog in heat and spent all day looking for him yesterday in the rain and storms. couldn't find him, so i wen walking this morning to look for him and found him 5 miles down the road full of sand spurs and all matted up. He is fine and so glad to see me. Thank God hes alright. That's all my news the weather is getting colder again freezing early mornings the next couple days. When I'm not playing horse games I'm looking up online seed catalogs planning for next spring. TOOTLES

Wow! You did strike gold with them!! Where did you find those bullion cubes? There are times when it would be so nice to have that as an option.
MSG and artificial sweeteners really screw me up. When I eat food that contains either, I suffer for it!!
It blows my mind as to how many people drink the "diet" sodas. How does this work? They invented "diet" drinks and obesity has exploded in our population... gosh, it's really not working, is it? Food manufactures make me nuts!
And..oh, I forgot one on my bio... clean freak!! Yup, I'm guilty!

I live 2 miles off the Gulf of Mexico the lower part of the panhandle of Florida on 5 acres of sand, lime rock fire ants, and no-see-ums that dearly love to make me miserable.. Doing my best to turn the whole thing into a garden. I forget I Am just 1 person with all my dreams of what I want to accomplish here. My 3 children are grown now loving grandchildren driving their parents crazy with all the health and nutrition advice . Wish I knew then what I know now. Welcome to the site. We do keep each other amused and sane.

Hi!
Nice to hear from you! I am in Maine.. so very far from the WV mountains!

I like how you describe the valley and how it is so deep and narrow. I have never visited there and it has to be so beautiful. I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian's of Western New York sate. It was beautiful rolling hills for as far as one could see. My Dad's farm was on top of a hill called "Windfall Hill" legend has it that when the Seneca still roamed that area a big wind came and knocked down all the trees. Tornado or hurricane perhaps?

Ah, don't feel bad that you have the joy of a young child in your arms... relish this time for it is far too brief!
I wish I had more wisdom when my child was young, and had been able to hold back my need to be running full throttle.

May I add a bit of concern in here?
I am very frightened by the food additives in our commercial foods. So many are sold as "healthy" and have those lovely little organic looking labels. If you read the thread on this site about Monsanto and their GM seeds... it is all pretty sobering. I highly recommend if you would visit the www.truthinlabeling.org site.
We now have an epidemic of ADD/OCD, Autism and other learning disorders in children. In adults there is a rise in cases of MS, MD, Alzheimer's and other nervous system type ills. Why?
I am adamantly opposed to the addition of Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and Aspartame to our foods. They have a direct affect on our brains in concentrated amounts. This website I mention will give you all the names that they can "hide" these additives in products under. Now, people will argue that both glutamate and aspartame are naturally occurring in our food... and they are.. but here is my question; Once they are concentrated and ingested into our bodies, what is the effect? I think they are responsible in part for the rise in the aforementioned disorders.
Please take a good hard look at your pantry, for the sake of your little one...
These seemingly benign little bullion cubes may contain MSG... and if they do not.. you have hit a gold mine!

I grew up on wholesome farm food and am very healthy. My mother grew and froze, canned or made everything we ate. My husband grew up on grocery store canned products in a city and he has poor health. Do you see where I am going with this? My Dad lived to be a hearty 91. My husband's step Dad is failing at 76.
You have the wonderful opportunity to offer your child great nutrition and few processed nasties!! Hey! This coming from a chocolate-holic!!!

I see Michelle shared her

My Dear, your husbands garden is very important... be so glad that he puts out the effort to grow for you!

I typically am not an alarmist, but this is one issue that I truly feel is out of control, but we are the ones who prepare our families food can have a direct affect in providing them the safest possible foods. All of this from a confirmed chocolate-holic!

I see Michelle has left you her "about me" list! She is too funny! We really do have a lot of fun, and just a little bit of heart felt sharing! :)
So, I guess it's my turn?
About me...
Denser that a doorknob...read all the time... lousy memory..but sharp as a tack when I think I'm right... semi-retired business owner... find myself worshiping the toilets I clean...chubby and happy, but still dream of those size 12 jeans...recalcitrant wife...mischievous...think politicians should clean the toilets they use...Jeans and T-shirts girl...love where I live... play with rocks... laugh at chipmunks...love my friends...spiritual, not religious...so-so photographer... dream a lot... wish I could tele-port..write family history and love to hear about others... curious to a fault... married to the same type of guy as Michelle (we secretly think they were brothers separated at birth).. love to cook most of the time... a virtual tick buffet!... grumpy some days!!!
So, there is the nut-shell...
Have a great day!!
:)

I love that quote too. It says alot for me and about me, I think.

I don't know what this website was like before, but its crazy wonderful now. I've been here since October, barely a month, and I look forward every day to signing on and seeing what's happening.

You'll soon find yourself in the middle of a pack of friends that are all friends with each other. And every one of them is great! So diverse, such different backgrounds and personalities, but bound together with the joys and frustrations of gardening! But its more than gardening. We're sharing stories about our lives, and inspiring each other in all kinds of ways.

This is a delightful web community. When I'm not online here, I'm often thinking about being online here. I keep wondering, "what I have I missed?" And each time I turn on my computer and click on my page, there's a message from someone I was waiting to hear from that lights up my day!

I know that will happen for you too, if that's what you want.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
