An interesting thought you brought up David. Isnt it wonderful that the world is made up of so many different people? It would actually be rather boring if we were all vegans or omnivores! I do find it interesting that you still called your McDonald…

I guess I come from a place/time that is somewhat in the middle of modern thinking. I kind of look at things both ways. As a very young boy I remember going out to Grandpas on the farm (not much of a farm actually - just a few acres). Anyway - it ha…

You have a point, David, but we could easily penetrate its loopholes, couldn't we? My thought about vegans, vegetarians, meat-eaters, and others who are urban and have never gardened or grown their own meat, have only idealisitic ideology to offer,…

Kerry M...without knowing where you are in this good US of A advice is difficult. Soil quality is key. So I'll give you advice on the worst soil quality I have ever encountered...Charleston South Carolina. In that area you have to dig deep and fill…

This is just something I thought about. For the Vegans and the other type folk who want things to be "natural"....I think that is a bit arrogant. Who is to say what is "natural"?? Everything we have on this planet - came from this planet. Just beca…

If they want my cherry tomatoes they will have to pry them from my cold dead hands ;-) Of course they will also have to get through a hail of AK-47 bullets! (no worries...I'm not a Loony...just a patio gardener and collector of fine firearms).

Kitties.

Agreed P about your last paragraph. I grew up some years ago when folks were VERY afraid of rabies and I'm also somewhat against wild or semi-wild kitties. But in truth at our place around the lake we only have about a dozen. "Our place" is a group…

I realize this isn't exactly gardening but it is growing grass (a plant). Matt L. made me think of this again and I thought I would re-post for other folks. I lived beside a cable guy in South Carolina. Not your normal cable guy - he was in the Nat…

Now....since I refreshed the feeder with "moderately strong" sugar water....they are fighting over it LOL.

Hi...I grew up gardening with my folks in Southern Illinois. Gardening there was pretty much a piece of cake - plant it and wait. The glacial black soil was awesome. Dad would spade up the dirt - I would watch for fishing worms - later Mom would pla…

Agreed chris on the soaker approach. I threaded a good soaker between my hedges in Denver (a really dry climate) and it worked great. I don't know what a good soaker hose costs these days but as my Dad always said "it isn't much money unless you do…

Well - no September Bonanza....all that work and I am getting about four cherry tomatoes a week. I won't do the "Husky Cherry Reds" again - since they aren't husky and the fruit is just standard cherries. Ce' est la vie.

Yeah P - I had the advantage of just being out there for the weekend. I really wouldn't want them around my house. As far as the rabies and BB plague things go...being in the employ of the CDC I see the stats....both are really rare. Wear over-ankl…

Yeah kls...one of my problems is that with only one HB coming around - I don't see the feeder level go down. Then it rains and fills it up a bit. I'm taking your advice and re-charging it today (with a lot less juice due to the lack of birds). At le…

OK figured it out now Michelle - anyway I'm gonna watch these "Husky Cherry Reds" closely and if they don't produce they are going to the firing range :-)

Yep Michelle....I have grown wonderful leafy tomato plants with little fruit over the years due to lack of sun. I have a new idea now. I bought low sun "Husky Cherry Reds" and explained to then while planting that if they didn't bear fruit I would take them out to the shooting range and have my buddy have his way with a 12 gauge shotgun :-) I have given them MG grow sticks and will water them - after that they are on their own.

Seriously though - I hope they do OK this year.

Me again. I was just reading your comments in the garden messups discussions. I live just east of Atlanta, and thought I might offer a bit of advice to your questions about tomatoes, although you sound like you've got a good idea of what to do.

The bigger the pots the better if you're depending on the soil. 12" diameter actually sounds pretty small. But if you add adequate nutrients you might be able to get by with smaller pots.
Tomatoes: you might pass on the Big Boy and get a patio variety. They're still available. Small and compact, but grow reasonably sized tomatoes.
Nutrients: try a tsp or so of Osmacote in the soil mix. Every 3 weeks, a bit of Miracle Gro in their water.
Think about putting the pots on wheels of some kind to move them around to the sun as needed. The soil mixture sounds okay. The sand will allow for good drainage.
You might also try upside down tomatoes if you're up to the challenge. There's been a big debate on this site as to wether or not it's worth it, but I am growing 3 upside down tomato plants as an experiment this year. I'm depending on nutrients more than soil. So far, so good. You can find my discussion about it in the Container Gardening group if you're interested. Best of luck with those tomatoes.

Hi David. I'm in Georgia too. Army brat, NC transplant, married to an ex-Navy nuke. I've been in GA 10 years, and I'm still trying to get used to it. But I love my garden. Glad to know you're gardening in spite of the challenges. This is a great web-community. Enjoy, and best gardening wishes! mwf

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
