What Are Planting Zones?

It seems every gardening book and nursery catalog refers to plant hardiness zones, also known as climate zones or growing zones. If you're new to gardening, you may be wondering what all the fuss is with these zones, and how to find out which zone you are gardening in.

Has anyone else considered living by a 100-mile diet (only eating foods grown/raised within 100 miles of your house)? I just listened to a really amazing podcast on a couple from Vancouver, BC who did it for a year and am inspired to try it myself...
