I_ tried the topsy turvy planters last year. As others have noted I spent a lot of time watering them. I also put some flowers in the holes on the sides - bad idea. The tomato plant needed all the space it could get. Sadly I had a very meager harves…

Hi Eric, I was just looking through some of the forum discussions on KGI, and this time I decided to start from the back of the list since I never seem to get all the way through from the front. I found your post, "Innovative Recycling in the Garden", and I'm sorry I never saw it sooner. I didn't join KGI until October last year, and then I faded out for the winter because there wasn't much going on that interested me.

I've become a nearly obsessive recycler. And I've started paying more attention to reducing and reusing. I put a lot of things to work in the garden, and I'm always looking for new ideas.

Well, a few weeks ago I started a new KGI group called The Recycle Bin. I really hope you'll join and share as much as you can. I've got one "discussion" in the group set up for posting pics, and I know we'd all love to see what you can do. We've got several members already. Like me, they care about the environment and want to see how creative they can get in their gardens.

I hope you'll join! Best gardening wishes! mwf Delete Comment

I just spent some time looking through your photos. You are definitely a front yard gardener! It must have taken so much time to plan it all out as you have and pull it together. It's really wonderful! And I particularly like how you made it what I would call "work and play." Work = veggies. Play = flowers. And planning for those quiet secret rooms was very imaginative. All very nice. How enjoyable it must be to watch your garden grow.

Hi, Eric --
Thanks for starting the thread aboout seeds from Seminis/Monsanto. IMHO it's THE big issue for home gardeners, whether they realize it or not. The more people talk about it the greater awareness of the problem there will be.

Chicken manure is still big up here, but steer manure is much cheaper now - I only use it as an ingredient in my compost. It's got a lot of sawdust, which locks up the carbon and doesn't decompose very well.
Tomatoes - I had great success with my three tomato plants last year, such that this year I'm putting out 15 plants. I used red plastic mulch, which reflects a certain wavelength of light that encourages growth and blossom set. This year I'm trying out Tomato Automators, basically a red tray with open ended spikes that you fill with slow release fertilizer.

Love your garden photos. I grew up north of Seattle, Lake Stevens. My parents and my aunts and uncles always had big gardens. I think chicken manure was the major fertilizer in common use. How do tomatoes do in your garden? My mother and aunts shied away from growing them claiming there weren't enough sunny days to ripen. But we had cucumbers galore.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
