Hi Salma, that recipe sounds very interesting, seems as though it would be a little like pumpkin pie in flavour. Cardamon is one of my favourite spices. I have some growing here, but not sure if it will produce seeds. I have it tucked away in a corn…

Hi Gillian, about the Amaranth, it looks like you have the grain version there. There are three types that I have tried, the same as in your pic which you allow to develop into a grain , then there are are a couple of leaf versions, one is all green…

Hi Salma, I love sweet potato and put them into soups and stews - even nice in dahl with a bit of spinach - makes plain dahl into a meal! Most of the time though I just bake them until soft - they dont need anything extra.

I did it - I ate some sweet potato leaves!

I have been hearing about how tasty sweet potato shoots and leaves are, (not regular potato leaves - they are poisonous) then even saw them for sale at the local saturday market. So armed with my scissors I trimmed back my sweet potato patch, and laid the shoots and leaves gently in the steamer. Wow! how tasty they were - not at all slimy (a lot of what is referred to as spinach-like here can be very slimy) definitely will be having that on the menu a bit more often!
It is very hot and humid at… Continue

Recycling to make a beautiful garden feature

I have always loved chimneas, but in the hot humid tropics any extra form of heat seems superfluous and in fact downright silly.
We do however have mosquitoes, and at this time of the year always have mosquito coils burning....... along with a couple of citronella candles,....... along with personal insect repellent on really bad evenings.
So.. I was eying these palm fronds that just lie around the bases of palm trees and end up in the landfill. I nabbed this one from a friend and voila - a trop… Continue

Honeyeaters

I love these little birds called honeyeaters, and we have plenty of them now - they are attracted to the passonfruit flower and the cats whiskers and the bottlebrush. All of which is flowering at the moment. I know they like to start their nests on hanging things, and I have tied a few bits of string at strategic places, but these have all been ignored. Yesterday after bringing in the washing we discoverd the start of a nest on the end of a piece of underwear! My hubby carefully disentangled it… Continue

Tropical fruits

Oh I do love tropical fruit. I just had half a pawpaw out of my garden filled with passionfruit pulp. The cloying sweetness of the pawpaw is offset by the slightly acidic taste of the passionfruit. A match made in heaven :)
There are so many mangoes everywhere - the road to work is bumpy with fallen mangoes. Most locals do not like the mangoes that grow wild and so they just fall to the ground and rot. The trees are also huge, so it is very hard to pick them, but everytime I see some within reac… Continue

Permaculture and feeding my soul

I have been toying with the idea of planting a green manure crop during the wet season. In the end I ordered pigeon peas, recommended for the tropics. You get an inoculant with it that helps to fix nitrogen in the soil when you cut it back. This is also recommended for building up the soil to resist wilt diseases. I want to taste the actual peas though and might keep some growing to use as mulch. One site said that this is the pea most commonly used for making dahl, so maybe I wont have to buy l… Continue

Me again, his allotment is not covered in snow, I was looking at some of the gardening videos he has made and in the video it was about his snow garden some other time.
It was a funny video anyway.
Well I had best to some work I think.
Red alert there is not snow in the UK!

Hi Gillian I did not save, we have just found a link that says you can grow both types of passionfruit from seed. They say fresh seed is best so when some of ours ripen I shall send you the seed.
Here is the link

Hi Gillian,
The brown drip hose is just from the local mitre ten store.
We have not had to replace any.
It is under mulch and the shade cloth is up for summer.
You can view it at number 5 photo on my page.
Have a great day

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
