Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Thanks for the reply Mike. Its always interesting to find out how others are doing things. As you may know allotments in the UK have been going for years and years, and for a lot of that time they have been in decline. Although now with rising oil a…

Hi Mike I really like the look of your community garden. Very organised and practical. I have an allotment in England which is similar to your communtiy garden. About five years ago our allotments were fenced to keep out vandals and thieves. Do you…

I think one major thing to consider when gardening on your flat roof top or balcony, is the weight of the pots/compost and the strength of the structure you are placing them on.

Hi Gillian I totally agree about the sweet potato leaves. I thought they were great to eat as well.

What is an Allotment

Allotments are now very popular in the UK. I used to have empty ones around mine for years. This site describes what an allotment is. The main advantage of an allotment is that it does not have to be too tidy, so is ideal for trying out different methods of recycling.
As long as you attend regularly and work the soil you can grow what you wish. Both vegetables and flowers.
Indeed i used to be a member of the… Continue

Useful Tools

I have found no specific place on KGI for identifying useful gardening tools.
Everyone has their own favourite tool. It may be one that you use everytime you go in the garden, or it may be one that belonged to your parents that brings back memories, and is still working perfectly.

Slug Boards

I have timber step over boards. These allow me to cross over long beds without having to walk all the way around. I do not like to walk on the soil as it ruins the tilth.
Most of the year and especially at this time of the year they attract slugs to the underside of the board. These slugs live in the soil and so are normally difficult to find, unless they are eating your plants.
I turn the boards over every week and dispose of the slugs that are hiding there. Sometimes there are slug eggs there… Continue

How to Ripen Tomatoes

We will soon be getting frosty weather and start picking our tomatoes when they are green.
One tip for turning green tomatoes red is to put them in a drawer with a ripe banana.
The ripe banana gives off ethylene gas which then ripens the tomatoes.
They never go as red as in the sunshine, more of a pinky red, but good enough for cooking with.
You probably all new that anyway, but its worth repeating.

Castle Howard Arboretum

They are keeping endangered trees here from all around the world. A very nice place to visit in autumn when the leaves are changing colour. See their website.

Hi Glenn. I'm a little bit under the weather right now. It started as sinus, but has been hanging on for a week now, with a fully stuffed up head and coughing. I am hoping it will be gone soon, as I don't want to go into the Christmas season sick.
I understand about the tomatoes. I think yesterday was the last of our tomatoes, even though the plants are still green, but we still have a number of peppers holding on. The weather here has turned cold, but we have had no frosts as yet. Our tomatoes did really well this year. We had so many I actually grew tired of eating them, but I processed many and have them on hand now for the winter. I agree, there is nothing like a home grown tomato. It is the queen of all garden vegetables, as no other veggie seems to elicit the same anticipation and delight as a tomato! So I am sure I am only a few bland and pasty store bought tomatoes away from the anticipation of my next homegrown plot of tomatoes that I will enjoy heartily and devour endlessly until I am sick of them once again!

Thanks for the welcome, Glenn. I look forward to learning more about gardening here--it's a pasttime/obsession/whatever that is never fully learned. My dog is a Golden Retriever, not as light as most of them.

We've been having pleasant afternoon weather this week too. Here, a frost kills things, then it gets nice again for a while. We've had some snow, but it didn't stay. Nice that you're having such a nice time in the garden.

Hi Glenn,
Thanks for your message and your comment on my fall garden photo. It does look kind of like you described! The summer house is my husband's office, but he shares it with me. It's a fun place to go and sit quietly on the porch.
If my garden only was a tiny bit as good as yours I'd be blissful. Yes, we do have a lot of space here in this yard, because we live in the suburbs outside of Seattle and the parcels are larger (but we pay the price with poorer public transportation options). I'd like to be able to plant good things over every square foot of it, but there never seems to be enough time for all that we want to do. Next year I hope to improve some, thanks to the many things I've learned from you, Carol and others here at KGI. You're welcome to drop by any time and be a weekend gardner...just keep a good eye out for that transporter!
By the way, I've been meaning to tell you how much I liked your Harrogate photos. I first heard of this show by reading James Herriot books (I've read them all). His books are what inspired me to want to visit Yorkshire, which I hope to do some day.
Take care, Glenn.

Thanks Glenn,
I've had black currants, they're great. Ten years ago I bought some
bushes and mailed them to my brother in New Hampshire. He planted
them and his wife makes black currant preserves for me and I in return
send them Mulberry preserves.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
