Thank you Joel!
I join because I am very interested more and more in vegetable garden lately and have been unsure some things about growing the vegetables. I have noticed that many members are in America while I am living in Johannesburg, South Africa.
I have tried some, such as tomatoes, peas and chilli and some of herbs and stopped years ago for some reasons till I bought a property a few months back. There is plenty of space for the plants so I chose the vegetables more than other plants/flowers etc as they can feed us and they are much fresher than the shops. I have planted some onions first as they grew roots from it, then I expanded to tomatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers, chives, parsley, leeks, spring onions, celerys, green peppers, lettuces(leafy), chilli, strawberries, then finally the runner beans, baby marrows and cucumbers as well as a fig tree. There were a lemon and lime trees. Most of them are my first time. So far they are growing well.
Beekeeping...no ways as I am scared of them but I love their fresh honey. I will never will be near them. Ha Ha!
Herbs...I would like to try them again. My daughter saw a chocolate mint plant..something like that at the nursery, begging me to buy it. She would like me to try using them for drinks, sauces. I have no idea what to do.
Cheese making...we don't have animals except for a old staffie who sometimes drives me mad as she sometimes damaged my plants by digging.
Pickling...oops, I have not tried it except the pickled onions
Composting...I might try it sometime after New Year as I still must find a spot for it.
Pests and amp...I am not sure what exactly you are talking about...If spiders or insects, I run away...I don't like them except for the earthworms as they are very good for my garden.

I would like to hear the other tips and advice.

NIce to "meet" you!
Angela

This coming january my classmate and I are planning to establish a vermiculture to provide organic fertilizer to our crops and soon we will introduce it to our community. You have any idea about this? maybe you could help us. thank you joel.

Thank you! How nice for the welcome. Gardening is such a nice diversion to think about as we are expecting a foot of snow in the next 24-36 hours! We are on the Wisconsin/Illinois border, so bad weather just makes us grateful for those bountiful summer months. Look forward to hearing other stories.

Thanks for making me feel welcome Joel. I look forward to making great connections through the site, which I think will be of great benefit particularly in my work through the Community Harvest Project (www.communityharvest.org.au). I invite Kitchen Gardeners to check out the site - it's still needing a lot of work but we are committed, and there is a lot the two groups have in common. Cheers!

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
