I read somewhere that what they eat can be regional. Learned behavior. What they eat in one area they may not eat in another. The ones around here are well fed, several deer blinds that grow corn patches just for them so they make better targets. ...

Deer have to be trained on an electric fence. But some peanut butter on the wire. They will lick it, and see the power of the fence. Try some of the flowering salvia's they are easier than garden sage. I even had some self-seed.

I have been trying to get sage started and I can't get it to grow. And they had an electric fence. Time to start over. Hmmmmmmmmmm...fuzzy and strongly scented - should just put my better half out there! Seriously though - my girlfriend said to ...

I leave across the street from a state park as well, so I understand your frustration. Is your fence high enough? It needs to be 8 feet, and it helps if the outer edge in planted with stuff they don't like, like anything in the sage family. Tall o...

AUGHHHH!!!!!!!...... The renters before us had a fence but I don't think it did any good. They don't even care that we have a 70 pound German Shephard. We're besieged here. (1/2 mile south of Oleno State Park) Had 18 deer fifteen feet from the ho...

Deer eat everything. you need a fence. I really did not want to fence in my garden, but it is the only way I can have veggies.

Does anyone have a list of the vegetables the deer won't eat? I'd like to plant a larger garden away from the house but it'll definitely have to be things the deer don't like. Any suggestions? thank you, blessings, julia julia ward - a BLINDING...

My better-half has been a CAM for over 15 years. You would have to go to one of the Association meetings and have the Board vote on it. It could take some time if there is quite a bit of opposition. The opposition will say that if there aren't sta...

Hi Deborah,
I have a 4x8 6" raised bed, my yellow crookneck squash are just setting their first blossoms, my sugar snap peas are full of blossoms, and I have some royal burgundy beans that are about to start setting. Bok choy is about 8" now and I have watermelon radish ready to start picking. Picked the eggplant when it went below freezing.
It's been horribly dry so I've been watering every day for about 15 minutes. And I concocted a little wall of empty cardboard beer boxes around the edges and then stacked cut off empty soda bottles about 3 1/2' high and put two layers of plastic tarp over the whole little garden. It's been a real fight this last week with it going down in the low 20's twice. I only lost two squash leaves.
I haven't had much to show for my efforts in the last year between the bugs and the weather and off timing - but I have some Galapogas Tomato seeds started and giant orange beel peppers.
My goal is to have some kind of vegetable from my garden every day in a least one meal.
Do you know how to grow sweet potatos?
Keep in touch!
blessings,
julia

Greetings Julia, was reading through todays blogs so wanted to see how your garden is doing in this cold snap.I wish I had some fresh eggplant, only my greens survived and are thriving. Every evening I cover everything up and uncover it when it warms up. It's so dry had to water today . I was hoping the frost would take out the grasshoppers but.. they are still abundant.

Hi Julia welcome from another Floridian. I live about an hour or so from you in Taylor County just off the gulf coast. I'm fighting grasshoppers around here too big med small and extra large green brown yellow ugly critters. hope the frost this weekend kills them off. Looking forward to getting to know you. Deborah

Hi...thanks for stopping by. You could help me go swat grasshoppers. Hard to do with an old hand-me-down wooden cane and an empty beer can. But that's another story! Am so happy to meet some gardening friends. As a transplant to the South this backwards cycle just has me sooooooooo confused. But my droopy eggplants from the spring have now gone nuts and are dripping with eggplants! Whoo who!...blessings, julia www.ablindingheart.com

Me again. I was looking over your website - ablindingheart.com. There's a lot there to take in. My computer, server, or something messed up and I had to reboot my system. Couldn't get back to your site after that. Maybe later. But I wanted to say I love "Eloise Ward's Pepper Hash Relish". I made a copy to keep, but I can't figure out where to put it in my recipe file! lol

You and I have a similar writing style, I think, incorporating a story with a recipe. I believe you do it better than I do though. I write, mostly poetry, but I'm keeping a blog now as "someplace to spill my brain." Maybe you'll check out my KGI blog and my blogspot blog and let me know what you think sometime when you have a chance. I'm not looking for free instruction, just general conversation from one writer to another.

I did get to read a little bit of your blog before I had to shut down. I would like to say, regarding your blog (though I realize it is highly affected by pain), remember, sometimes there is plenty to say in the silence.

Wow! Cool! (existential hippie chick) I might be one, but I'm not sure. If I am, I was a late bloomer to it, and there's still a little bit of "anal" I can't shake loose. If I'm not, I sure wish I was!

Finally! Someone besides me who wants to visit the historic gardens of our own country first! Almost everybody on this site wants to go to Italy! Such romantics! I visited Monticello as a child. I focused on the house and furnishings back then, didn't have the place of mind to appreciate the gardens, but I would love to go back now. Jefferson was a groundbreaker and trend setter for gardening in the USA.

I live and garden in Georgia, east of Atlanta. We have mild winters here, usually. I'm a member of the "Kitchen Gardens, Southern Style" group. We haven't had any discusions recently, but as winter comes on and gardening for most slows down, perhaps there will be things to talk about.

There are great people on this site. I've made several good friends very quickly. There are lots of folks from Florida. Look through the members site and you might find someone you know, or someone you'd like to know. I'd like to add you as a friend if you don't mind.

I enjoy reading folks pages and leaving encouraging comments. I'm a bit cooky sometimes (I appreciate a good sense of humor) but I can also talk serious. Look over my page and read my blogs if you care to. You'll get a better idea of who I am. Not all my blogs are recipes, even though the titles sound like it. Check out some of my "friends" also. Great girls! One is an English professor, another is ex-Air Force, and yet another is a living history book! And there are others. I love them all!

Hope I'll hear back from you. I'd like to know more about the "lightning" thing. I'm going to go check out your website next.

Have a beautiful day!

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
