My First COURGETTE (Zucchini)

I am growing Courgettes for the first time ever this year.  I have just two plants and they have now started to produce fruit.  So here they are...  The very first courgettes I have ever grown..  I tasted the one that is cut and it was delicious.

And my first SEEDS to SAVE

I have also done quite well with Broad Beans this year, again my first time ever.    They are over now and I have eaten lots and frozen some.  I left these few (about 500gms {1 lb}) until the pods were quite black and then harvested them for seed for next year.
IMG_0557 And a little RESCUE

A couple of years ago I went away in late November for a few days and didn't return until late April..  NO, I wasn't thrown in prison but it is a long story....  Anyway, when I got back, one of my lemon trees had suffered severe damage from the winter chills.  To be honest, I quickly decided that it was a gonner and threw it under the bench in the workshop where I forgot about it.  Imagine my surprise the other day, when I suddenly noticed a glimmer of hope.  I think it's on the road to recovery.
And a big thank you to all those people who have offered advice and support.  You know who you are.

Failed Fennel

IMG_0555 I've had a problem with my fennel.....

The plants have grown but have not formed the bulb at the base.  This is the first time I have grown fennel and I'm not sure what the problem is, or more likely, has been..

Maybe someone out there can help me.....

I hope so as I am intending to grow some more....

Profile Information

Where do you live and garden?
South West France
How long have you been growing food?
4-10 years
About Me:
I moved to south west France back in 2004, to a property with a large garden. There was a lot of building work to do so gardening took a back seat until 2008 and all I did was mow the extensive park and try and prune the fruit trees and pick and use any fruit they produced. Plums and cherries were particularly successful.
In 2008, I took a small plot and made a "potager". In September 2008, Kate (as part of her Vegetable Vagabond Tour) and I increased the plot to 16 m2
This year we really bit the bullet and laid out an entirely new area of about 25 metres (yards) square. That's about 5 times the size of the new White House garden I'm not going to cultivate all of it directly but I have set just over half of it into production. The land is hard clay so each bed takes a lot of amendment, which I'm doing slowly.
Dream garden travel destination:
I'm going to try and attend all the KGI Global meet-ups.... 2009 shouldn't be too difficult, after that we'll just have to see.... 2010 is a long way but.... 2011 I'm sure I'll manage...
Favorite foods:
In France you don't have "favourite foods". All food is treated with reverence and meals aren't made they are constructed. For me , I really like duck in it's various forms - foie gras, confit de canard, duck with pineapple and ginger sauce. I also love homemade bread, homemade chutney and homemade jams and any fresh vegetables.

Fun in September

Ian, ably assisted by Kate, is hosting a weekend of gardening fun in September.

The weekend is in support of Kitchen Gardeners International's commitment to encouraging vegetable gardening across all the nations of the world.

The fun will start in France on Friday evening and go through to Sunday evening with visits to local gardens and markets etc. There will be ample opportunity to sample some of Perigord's exquisite cuisine and, after all, Perigord is one of France's gastronomic delights.… Continue

My Friend Bernard

I visited my friend Bernard the other day and was forced to try a couple of his wines.

The first was his 2007 AOC Bergerac Rosé. Of course, this wine was still very young at only a few months old but rosé is best drunk young. This one was a very

FOOD GROWING BLOGGERS GET TOGETHERS

Some weeks ago the idea of a kind of international food growing bloggers get together was mooted. It was a kinda fun thing that grew out of various conversations by some blog writers, Patrick in Amsterdam, Kate in Adelaide and myself

Well things have been quietly going on in the backstreets of the towns and countries around the world and I’m pleased to report that there are now Food Growing Bloggers Get Togethers planned for the next few years.
They kick off this year with events on August 24.… Continue

Reflections on times past

I used to sit in a pub with a few friends and the conversation would eventually get around to gardening. At the time I was probably the only one out of the five or six of us who regularly met who didn’t grow food. You know the reasons, I was too busy, I worked long hours, I had a large garden which already took a lot of maintenance.

So there we were, usually in a real ale pub, five fairly conscientious veggie growers and me. Every so often someone would claim they had grown the biggest potato,… Continue

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the follow up, checking to see if I can attend the September get together. Sadly, finances being what they are this year, I am unable to make it. Hopefully, there will be a next year's event and our economy will be in better condition.
I hope all is well with you and I applaud you for putting together the opportunity for KGI members to get together in such amazing surroundings!

Hi there. The invitation for the NA group is for those with a spiritual kinship as well as blood. However, I understand your declination. Is it okay if I have a "kinship" with you? What with my mom being British (though her heritage is Irish), and me being born in France, and although I am completely removed from both of those countries, I feel a special kinship with you because you have the experience of both cultures. How wonderful that you do!

Blue Lake green beans grow long and slender. Lima beans are generally shorter and wider. Some limas, especially those grown outside the US, can be poisonous. This is due to a compound called phaseolunatin, a cyanogenic glycoside that breaks down ...
