If you did this well with your first garden just imagine what next year's harvest will be like. But why wait until March? Here in Florida we can be growing so many great things in the winter months. (beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, collards, must…

You might want to consider vermicomposting. My worms do such a good job of keeping up with kitchen scraps that I rarely have anything from the kitchen for the regular compost.

Starting a community garden will not only fulfill your need to garden but will help encourage others that want to garden but think they can't. Good luck with your project. With your determination it is sure to be a success.

I suggested the same thing and this would be the reason. As when in my biology class I use to dissect these worms , I usually get their bodies just full of the rotting matter and it is the color their bodies show. So what they eat determines their co…

I found vermincomposters.com while I was checking out redwormcomposting.com and found a discussion on worm color. They said that what you feed the worms can have some effect on color. If you feed your worms pumpkin they may be temporarily orange. P…

No, it is only a couple of the worms that are changing color and they seems fine other than being less colorful than the others.

Master Gardener Class

I started the Master Gardener training class. We got 4 books to study and looks like there is so much to learn in the 3 short months of the program. I feel so fortunate to have this opportunity to learn and can't wait to start volunteering with the extension office to help other gardeners.

Kay~ You are in Fla. ~ so I have a question for you. Hope you don't mind. My neighbor told me that if I pick my tomatoes while green before the start to split and wrap each one in newspaper and put them in the fridge they will keep for quite a while. True? I am getting soooo many! Yea me!!!! My first attempt!!!!!

Hello kay,
In 2005, the year I ruptured a disc in my back, I couldn't do my usual soil
building routine. I got someone to turn my soil and I used fertilizer. That
was the only year I got infested with aphids, and the ants that farm them.
It seems crowder peas don't particularly thrive in soil that's too good.
I looked at the pictures of your brocolli, collards and spinach, you've
got some excellent soil. If you try them again, don't do anything to the
soil after the previous planting. If the soil is a little tired, oddly enough
they'll be happier and maybe the aphids won't be such a problem.
I still get a few but not enough to be an issue.

The nights here are cool, but the days are still very hot. I started some lettuce, kale, radishes and collards a few weeks ago, they're doing so so. Something is alreading eating the young leaves of the radishes. I think I will wait until the days are a bit cooler to do some more planting. My pumpkins are just sending out flowers. I am having lots of butterflies, which means lots of leaf-eating caterpillers.

We' ve been having some rain but not too much. I am happy for the rain cause the soil is very sandy and drains quickly. I have been harvesting my herbs, blending and freezing them. My okra, peas potatoes and tomatoes did poorly. I am now planting fall stuff, which does better for me. Thanks for the friendly invite.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
