hI, I'm a native of Maine and am now residing in Minnesota....There are quite a few hobby grape growers here as well as commercial vineyards. If you can grow grapes here you sure should be able to grow them in Maine too!!..I recently came across a v…

Thank you for all your replies. Except in extreme summers, we generally have enough water to get by; we supplement when the rain gauge shows less than 2.5 cm in a week. So vows for next year are to be less timid about my pruning, put down a heavier…

Pruning is a very important issue and so is the age of the grapevine. You can expect an improvement in size and flavour as the plant matures. Initially, fruit production should be reduced to allow the development of the plant and root system. I'm i…

For better results you have to review your pruning method in winter so that your vines produce less grapes. The remaining will be bigger ,sweeter and more healthy ...

I didn't end up planting them this year, but it's still on my list for "one of these years". :)

We live in central Maine and have 8 varieties of grapes. Most of them came from Fedco, right here in Maine. King of the North is the one that does the best. It grows like crazy. Mars has also done well. Some of the others are just getting started. K…

Kristin, did you ever plant your grapes? I'd love to hear how it's working out. I'm wondering about my grapes. I started out with Canadice, which are wonderful and sweet, but teeny-tiny! Last year (I think their 4th year?) there were dozens of huge…

These stories are painfully hilarious! Thanks for sharing. It does make me a little fearful of my garden, though......I'm a major klutz, but somehow I've avoided any major injuries (so far).

Well...parnell is really the garden wiz. I'm pretty good at weeding, harvesting and cooking...we make a good team. Our tomatoes were pretty sad too, but basil was OUT OF CONTROL! Unfortunately, we didn't have enough tomatoes to go with the basil!!

On Self-Control in the Garden

This year marks the first year in over seven years (since the birth of my oldest daughter) that I've had the time free, and hands free, long enough to REALLY spend time out in the garden. In fact, it's only been in the last two, that I've had a garden at this house at all. My youngest is about to turn four, and has a personality that allows her to follow along and help in the garden, or to entertain herself in the vicinity for reasonably lengthy periods of time. Maybe it's the product of being a… Continue

Waiting......

There really isn't anything green in my garden. Oh, I'm exaggerating slightly- there are a couple of rhubarb shoots coming from the root I planted last week, and the mint, tarragon, and lavender are growing. But really, when I look at my garden right now all I see is dirt. Goo… Continue

Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
