There is a system where using a Lasngworth hive system that you replace one of your frames with a frame with larger comb foundation. It called a drone frame. The queen will only lay drones in it. It seems the veroa really like drone brood. You then…

I got these hives six months ago and its fascinating but I’m beginning to realise that the habitat bees need is becoming compromised and if we want to save our bees we need to work on that too. great seeing every ones bees and gardens.

Is Bull Kelp something you pick up on the beach? I got some kind of seaweed from the beach and soaked it in a bucket of water to make seaweed tea - diluted 10/1. I also put some in the compost, and also in one of my vegetable garden layers. the thing this that you do all these things and then are not sure what works, but everything is looking nice and green and happy and my plants are flowering. Maybe it is also the combination that works, not one single thing. That was a geat video, but afterwards the guy was talking about cardboard blocking the roots so I wonder if that would have immediatley put some people off.

Hi there landscape safari man,
I have just planted some seeds in my new "nodig" vegetable patch. Since December I have been piling the patch up with cardboard, lawn clippings, hay compost and now a thick layer of very aged mulch. I dug down in a little corner just to check (I couldnt resist!) and all the grass had died and I found a couple of earthworms, so that is all good. funny that some people say newspaper and cardboard are great - they attract earthworms, and others say they never breakdown and plants cant spread their roots. Guess we just have to experiment ourselves.

The shortest day

We finially past the shortest day , cool im feeling pretty good about the shape of the garden . our broad beans are roaring away and the beats and carrots are pretty tasty to . The chooks have slowed down a bit but still provide a good supply of moral boosting entertainment. One of our biggest problems down here is the huge amounts of rain we can have ... for weeks on end . so to combat this i make a point of building up my winter beds in Autum and getting things in the ground early . this gives… Continue

No digging way down south

I’m reading all of your posts and everyone is so excited about going into spring well I’m about sick to death of tomatoes and cant wait to have some Autumn sweet peas and broccoli . As well as the feijoas which have come on in the last day or two .
Is Anyone doing no dig gardening ? I’ve just started in the last few Month and I’m a real convert the basic idea is not to disrupt the soil and to build it up by sheet composting . You never actually turn the soil over . The soil activity is never dis… Continue

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
