All the potatoes we've ever grown were certified seed potatoes. We were out in the potato patch yesterday, digging around. Only found a couple VERY tiny little guys before we decided to let them rest for a while. Maybe more through winter. It's very…

Kristen, We tried potatoes one year using stacked tires. They grew fantastically, but when it came time to harvest NOTHING was there!! I've heard other people have the same problem with the tire-method. Of course, for some reason we're having a hard…

We have 6 hens currently. We had gotten them (a total of 13 at the time) last spring, thinking we were completely within our rights as far as the City was concerned. However, we have a neighbor who started complaining (before she knew about the chic…

I just love the idea of trying my hand at all the things that used to be routine in a farm kitchen. I am sure I will not do all of them as a routine, but some will become part of our lives, and others we can at least say we tried. Sort of paying homage to our ancestors. Those things are what build character, IMO. Please post pics of your house. I'd love to see it. We are renovating ours...80 year old Cape Cod farmhouse.

I know exactly what you mean about the milk. I grew up on a dairy and fresh is best! Nothing else compares! I can recall the days when we were allowed to drink it straight from the vat as it was pumped in... fresh and warm. Most people have never had it like that... and they have no idea what they are missing. Sadly, for me it is just a dim memory now... and the Gov. regulations prevent us from being able to enjoy it in such a natural state.
As a child I never broke a bone.. and had many reasons that I should have! I think it was because my bones were so strong from drinking lots of milk!

Welcome!
I know you will find some wonderful and informative people of like mind here in KGI.
I too, try to grow as much as I can of my own food. I can, freeze and dry as much as possible.
What is your favorite bread to make? I have my mother's recipe on my blog, if you would like to check it out. Lately, I have been baking the 5 minute a day bread from Mother Earth News magazine... and I love it. It gains in flavor with each day it sits in the fridge waiting.
I assume you have cows or goats for your milk? I am trying to convince my husband to let me have chicken... but he has not budged yet!

Well, how self-centered was THAT?!?! ha ha ha
Actually, I just thought I would share a couple links, rather than really rambling on and on! My main blog is listed above, but there is more than just that. So, here they are:
~Since I spend so much time in the kitchen anyway, I thought a blog dedicated to that seemed quite appropriate: http://www.mamataneyskitchen.blogspot.com
~Also, while we're homebrewing now, we plan to open our own microbrewery here in a couple years. We thought we would document our journey here: http://www.soulonebrewery.blogpost.com
~One of my other name-tags says that I am a freelance photographer. I'm not sure yet how many photos I will upload to this site, but you can check out all my photos here: http://flickr.com/photos/funkymamataney - there are sets and collections on a variety of subjects and topics, including one of our little homestead "The Blue Nymph Homestead"
While I don't have a good link for it that I want to put up here just yet, I have started a local chapter of the international group for "Greenies", Green Drinks. Our group is called Big Lick~Green Drinks and we're based out of Salem, VA. You can find a local Green Drinks chapter, or how to start your own, by checking out http://www.greendrinks.org.
And that seems to be enough about me for right now! :)
**NOTE ~ I tried making all the links active, but when I posted this blog, they weren't showing up. So, sorry 'bout that!**

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
