Maria, you are getting some good advice on this struggle. As a experienced ''vine asassin'',I know she is correct. It just takes time. You WILL eventually turn the tables on this thing. have been fighting the ''GREEN MONSTER'' for years,....bindwe...

I just cleared a 30 galon trash container full of morning glory. The bind weed I take every day and it comes back the next. Poyson ivy I am afraid to touch. Last time I had it all over my body (didn't know what it looked like) had to take a shot o...

Maria, I have this in my corral in one part of it, and the lunatic alpaca that is where the bindweed is (I have to keep him separate) won't eat it. I'm pretty sure that yours looks like the same leaves I have on my plant. It's definitely a western...

Hi Maria...I'm not able to answer your question about the strangle weed or poison ivy....I don't have any poison ivy, and I didn't spray my morning glory (strangle wed) because my dogs have access to that area and I didn't want them exposed to the spray. All I can say is that the weeds I sprayed with the vinegar solution started to die immediately...within minutes. I would have to assume that other weeds would respond similarly.

I can't imagine where you live in Charlotte to have such a big yard to work in. I work on Freedom Dr and there is no place to do much gardening. My gardening here consist of potted plants inside and out. Happy gardening.

I noticed you have pine tree close to your garden. One year after I started my squarefoot bed, it had to deal with the roots from the pine trees. Are the roots from the pine trees invading your beds?
You asked if there are any raw foodist here. I have been eating raw for a number years, and for the past 5 years I am growing what I eat. I love making raw smoothies from the stuff I grow. I have already started on my fall planting.

Maria, I just joined Southern gardeners group and saw a photo/question you had.The plant in question is called POKEWEED. It's abundant in NC, and PARTS of it are edible. google it for all the details/recipes....remember the song Poke salad Annie? maybe not. good-luck.

Yes, unfortunately the 20% vinegar will kill everything, including your grass. It is probably best to use it only when you have an area that is overrun by blackberries and other weeds you want to get rid of and you have no other plants nearby that will be harmed. If you go after the blackberries ruthlessly with a shovel and clippers (to cut the root off as low as possible) you can get ahead of them for a time, but if you don't kill the root they will always come back.

Maria, here is a tip for killing blackberries. You can get 20% vinegar solution from the nursery supply store or from an online nursery supply. This will kill blackberries, but you will always have to keep after them once they get started on your property. I buy contractor's silt fence (with attached stakes) to cordon off areas where I want to use this vinegar because, like your, I have animals that I don't want to have near the sprayed areas. I will upload some photographs this weekend so you can see what I am talking about.

Hi Maria,

I just noticed your question about the "little plant" growing in your garden, but I think you've already received sage advice from several people. We have morning glory here in Seattle and I have my own personal little war going with it in my back yard! It never gives up.

I had a chance to visit Charlotte last summer for the first time, as my job requires me to travel there on occasion now. I loved Charlotte and am looking forward to returning in the future.

Your photos are beautiful. Are those blackberries? We have lots of those here in Seattle too. Some people actually consider them somewhat of a weed, but I don't. True, they will try to take over just like morning glory, but you get the berries in return....so yummy.

My son always have these kinds of encounters with nature. He takes the caterpillars from the plants where they are exposed to birds and keep them in small boxes, feeds them with leaves, and when they become butterflies frees them in the garden.
