Do not ever give up

Because you never know what will come of your efforts. I am so grateful for the fall plants I just threw out in the garden after an exhausting summer season of gardening, harvesting, preserving, and WEEDING! But the fall crops are so wonderful and it is such a pleasure to still be getting fresh food straight from the earth to the table. It will not last too much longer, but for now any green or colorful fresh food is a gift from God.

Here they come!

The tomatoes are in, slowly the first ones are turning, a blush, a tinge of yellow, pink, paler green, and then overnight a burst of color. Then off the vine to finish in the house. The bins look like art, only, you cannot taste art> I cannot wait for dinner tonight.

Local Lunch Today

Today was a joyful lunch spent around a table strewn with vintage pieces of fabric and seated with guests all of whom enjoyed a beatiful artwork display of local fruits, vegetables, and homemade sweet potato biscuits with local country ham. After nearly 30 years of being together, my husband has come to the garden. It was in his own time, on his own terms, but it is an amazing Blessing to be sharing the experience with him. For those of you out there who have a partner covered in dirt, chiggers, and have tomato juice under the fingernails, go join them and make them the happiest they can possible be.

How things grow

I am amazed at how I can pick early in the morning from the same plants I picked at dusk the day before. The vegetables seem to grow befroe my eyes. I wonder sometimes if I had the patience to stand there long enough, still enough if I could actually see them grow.

If you are talking bush beans, about all you can expect is 2 good harvests. With pole beans they just keep growing and blooming and making beans until frost. However they take longer to get going. In a year when I am real organized and the weather is good, I plant bush and pole beans at the same time. By time the bush beans stop the pole beans kick in, and I don't have to worry about succession plantings

there is a spray you can make with milk that helps with powdery mildew, I have never tried it, but you might want to google it.

oops I meant my peppers were just starting to color up (turn red or yellow).

The cool wet July has really slowed things down in my nashville garden as well. I have only harvested a few okra pods. I tried to order some from Fresh Harvest a local farmers coop, and they could not fill my order. A lot of my paste tomatoes have died, but my cherry tomatoes are doing well, and I have harvested several slicers. Cucumbers have done really well and peppers are just starting to color cup. Beans are slow. On the other hand flowers are doing great, sunflowers and zinnias especially. However with all the rain I am expecting powdery mildew on ths zinnias any day now.

Capturing seeds: I strained my tomatoes through a fine mesh colander like you recommended, then found the tiny tomato seeds impossible to retrieve for saving unless I used tweezers and pulled them out one at a time, which I just can't do! (time, patience, etc.) After a day of leaving them to try and figure it out, they started going black, so I dumped them down the sink, and really had to scrub (and scrub) the colander to get them all out!

Seed storage: I've been using snack size zip lock bags, which are too flimsy for sort-friendly storage. My husband came up with the idea of using empty prescription medicine bottles with new labels. So far that's working much better.

I don't know if I mentioned that I had only 4-5 tomatoes of normal size to work with the when I processed them. The rest? About 100 cherry tomatoes. It felt like it took forever! I got 1 1/2 pints of processed tomatoes and 1 1/2 pints of juice, as I previously mentioned. I couldn't process the half pint of juice because it wouldn't sink in the boiling water. So I drank it. I added a pinch of salt and it was utterly delicious! Then I ruined it by adding just a little bit of sugar to counter the acidity. Yuck! I had to pour it out! But I can't wait to make more, which I think will be today, as I have another 200 (this time) cherry tomatoes ready to process.

I'm quickly running out of shelf space in my pantry for everything I'm canning this year! And I haven't even mentioned all the stuff I'm freezing and drying!
