Her the clay is not red but gray. Compressed over the centuries it makes slate. Lime is a wonderful addition. Your local extension agency can do a soil test for a few dollars that will tell you just what needs to be added and in what quantities. Or,…

This group is for gardeners in Georgia. Let's talk about issues that are specific to our state, like the drought, clay soil, extreme heat and humidity, what grows well here, what doesn't, and year-round gardening.

Just wanted to stop by and say hi Martha.I hope all is going well with you.Can you believe how bitterly cold it has been lately?Im so waiting for spring so I can spend more time outside gardening.I did buy a Christmas cactus this morning at Price Chopper for 3 dollars.I have never had one before. So now I need to learn how to take proper care of it.I heard they are easy to keep.Any way have a great day.

Welcome!
We have a lot of fun and lots of sharing and good serious discussion on this site. Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for replying to my discussion "changes come so quietly". I am enjoying the richness and passion that is being shared there. Thanks for the info on the kale. Cuke beetles are a real problem for me. Where do you buy your row covers?

Oh, almost forgot, speaking of the breakfast survey, check out Stephanie Jansing's blog "Pumpkin Oatmeal." It's a very versatile recipe. The pumpkin is the main "thing." Everything else is modified to your personal preferences. My husband and I just loved it. I added pumpkin pie spice. Delish!

Hi Martha. Welcome to KGI. This is a great place, with lots of great people. I saw your reply to the breakfast survey. That was my post. I'm looking for new breakfast ideas, and I'm getting lots of good ones on this website.

Do you live in a house or an apartment in the city? We have a great Container Gardening Group that you might want to look at. Some very enthusiasic and dedicated growers in that group. Last week a new member joined who gardens "at the windowsill". Now that's dedication! Look for "Ilex" (http://my.kitchengardeners.org/profile/Holly) among the members. You won't believe what she's doing with containers in downtown Detroit. True inspiration.

I'd love to visit New England some time. I always think of being there in the fall, my favorite season.

Hope you'll like it here.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I may have to grow some Rhubarb just to see if it is something I will like. It is in all my catologs & I was told that it will stand on it on after the frist year.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
