Seems like a good place to talk about the world-wide Transitions movement taking place, emphasis on local communities becoming sustainable, less dependent on cheap oil as we have been and buying local as much as possible. Permaculture and environmen…

Yes Kathryn, they are stinging nettles and I harvest them (with long sleeves and gloves on !), use them fresh in stock and dry them for tea and later use in soups and stir-fries in the winter. Loaded with minerals and vitamins A and C and chlorophyl…

Had an interesting experience this year. Have a very old plum tree that came with the yard. For the first 5 years had zero plums in spite of lots of blooms. Then last summer they came raining down for three weeks. What had changed?? Then I read some…

Kitty and Sue - Don;t know what info gave you fermenting temperatures so low Posts on this site recommend room temps 68-70 degrees. less time if above, more if below. Might be O.K. for storage as the fermenting will be slowed down. Though I do add w…

Harvested some peanuts today, not enough for my husband to make his own peanut butter. Cayenne, scotch bonnet and jalapeno peppers did well and still sending out flowers. Garlic did well, but onions did not. Cucumbers did much better than last seaso…

This was a wierd year for me. I would have assumed that it was the weather, but our elderly neighbors' garden did terrific. So it's me. I'll try to add a lot of compost this spring to improve the soil fertility. Our onions, garlic, romaine and bush…

My garden this year was a bit of a disappointment, but the summer was cool and rainy, so that may be part of the cause. I also think I need to amend my soil, it's very heavy and hard. More TLC and perhaps next year will be better.

Sadly, I didn't get that done this year. And now we've had a frost, so the leaves are brown and falling.

Yes, but I picked them before then because they had lost their leaves by then. Pickled them this summer to make dolmas and also added them ro cucumber and zucchini pickle crocks to maintain "crunchiness". Also learned grapes develop more sweetness i…

Hi Maxine,

Nice to hear from you...Hmmm Walnut sauce. Did I say I had a recipe? I can't find the recipe card right now; but there is a Ligurian recipe that is made by grinding walnuts, olive oil, garlic, parmesan cheese and a little salt, in the food processor. Heat it up a bit - rich and delicious on pasta. Janet

You live in Carnation? Oh man I'm jealous! I love it up that way. We'd have moved up there a few years ago if a) we could have reasonably afforded it, and b) it wouldn't have been such a long commute for the hubby. We still love our little place in Olympia though, it's just not as far out of the way as we'd sometimes like it to be. ;)

Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
