A mud garden!!! What a fantastic idea! We put a pool in this past summer & the kids enjoyed digging in the dirt all over our yard . However, the dirt mounds will soon be replaced by lawn & gardens. What a great way to keep a place where it is OK to…

Hi Patty and Spuddy! I have my herbs in planters so that I can bring them inside in winter. I just filled the planters up with a mixture of compost soil and top soil from LI (bought it at Home Depot, actually). It's cheap and it's organic - you rea…

RE: Pickled banana peppers. I posted the recipe for my pickled peppers in the P/K group. You asked about heat and refrigeration. I packed the peppers raw and water-bathed them for 10 minutes. The "heat" I was referring to was of hot peppers, not temperature. I refrigerated one jar of peppers which had a damaged lid (when I had dropped it while removing from water bath). The other jars are storing just fine in my pantry. I'm going to be making more pickled peppers this weekend, and some of them will be hot this time. Let me know how it goes if you try it!

Hi Patty. Thanks for asking for my recipe for pickled peppers. I'll try to post it today in the P/K group. I'll also try to answer your questions there. Thanks for adding me as a friend!

Hi Patty. Banana pickles are sweet(like bell), not hot. You can pickle them in anything, making them hot or sugary sweet. I wanted mine to be mild, like the ones you can put in a salad or get on a sub sandwich, so mine are canned in a simple vinegar solution. No sugar. No heat. You can prepare okra or bell peppers the same way. I'd be happy to share the recipe if you want it.

Free Compost on Long Island

I just returned home with my free compost! Woo-hoo! (This is exciting to me...my husband thinks I'm a little crazy.) Just a few miles away is Holtsville Park and Ecology Center where they accept residents leaves and turn it into black gold then, they give the stuff away for free 7 days a week! If you live on Long Island, NY in the town of Brookhaven, you can get this great stuff too!

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
