I have to borrow my daughter's camera again because my tomato plants are developing the most peculiar symptom that I've never seen before this year. The tomato vines are being held up by tomato cages and the tops of the leaves are shriveling and c...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

My pea stems are hollow, but they are green. Hmm ... pumpkins are dying too? I would think something is out of balance with that soil. But then, I never had any luck myself with commercial mixes. I just use plain dark dirt and mix some composted a...

I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

Hey Beva, I have some gardening spots that border a patch of pine trees too. It seems that lime helps me out. On the other side of that patch, I just let it stay acidic and planted blueberries. hehe

Hey Pisces, We live near a creek, so we have lots of racoons too. It helps if we bury the scraps but the coons will dig them up sometimes. I tried sprinkling some powdered lime over them before adding dirt on top, and it seemed to help even more.

Did I mention the little white cups are the cleaned yogurt containers that I started the seed in? I wrote all the info in permanent marker on the sides, and am using them as markers in the garden after setting out the plants. I secured the cups through the drainage holes punched in the bottoms. I also should back up that info by writing it all down somewhere I won't lose it, or taking photos...

I wanted to mention that I envy you being able to raise your own meat. I think I mentioned before that we did when I was growing up. I hope to do so again soon when I can afford fencing for a cow, and a pig pen. This year, getting the chicks was our priority. Diana, a KGI member, who lives not far from me, was saying that she got her beef this week. I think they paid to let the farmer raise it and take it to the butcher. I'm pretty sure it must have been delivered all cut and packaged.

I never thought about getting my own meat this way. If it's not too expensive, maybe I should check it out and consider it until I can afford to raise my own. Too late this year I suppose. But nice to think about my own clean, hormone and drug-free beef and pork in the freezer.

When my dad left the Army, and we retired to the coast of NC, we fished commercially, and put hundreds of pounds of fish and shrimp in the freezer every year, along with beef and pork. I don't think appreciated the blessing of it all enough back then.

Hi Rebecca Mills, welcome to KGI. I'm sure you'll find the site interesting, we're a pretty friendly bunch. You'll find all manner of discussions in the forum (follow the link in the top navigation bar) and there is also a notes section where I can put stuff that may be of interest to members. At the moment there are one or two "how to" articles and a whole range of recipes. (follow the notes link)
If there is anything I can do then please, just leave a message on my page

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
