It takes a bit of work to put these together but they work GREAT! I pound a short stake notched at the top to hold on to a center piece of twine. Run twine straight up from stake to bind three tobacco stakes into teepee. As the tomato grows we wrap…

I am watering at the roots, too, and not so often anymore; I learned my lesson. I also put a layer of wheat straw and shredded paper at the bottom of the plant so no dirt would splash on the leaves. I can see that it holds moisture much better than…

Wow, they're sure looking good! :) I tried pots and didn't work for me. Straight in the ground got me a great deal of baby greens and lettuce, and the same seeds in the pot didn't even sprout properly and they were stunted, though I used the special…

I water early in the morning, too, since it's so refreshing to be out in the coolness of the day. And yes, my garden gets quite a little bit of sun 10am-7pm. I mulched all my beds with wheat straw and shredded paper and it helps greatly. Where the b…

In my opinion, you won't have any success trying to grow full heads of lettuce in the warmer parts of Georgia, but baby lettuce can do great. I was surprised to learn that myself this year. I had many pots of lettuce in the spring. I cut them off at…

Roxana, my garden gets a long day of direct sunlight from dawn, forward. So I get up early and water my garden heavily (until puddles form) right at dawn every day. Well, I do miss a day here and there, and in that case, I water in the evening, then…

I think tomatoes prefer to be watered at the roots, so i have laid a soaker hose and just water them that way. Once or twice a week if there has been no rain.

Great post, indeed!!!! Thanks a lot for the tips! Start small, ha?! :) Well, my first garden ever, is 48/23ft. :) Never planted one plant in my life, until this year; my DH thinks I'm getting crazy! I could not imagine I would enjoy it so much! It's…

Hello everyone!!!! I I live in GA, this is the first year when I just planted 12 raspberry canes, bare roots(well, it's my first year when I ever planted something! ;)). Most of them have sprouted new leaves, however something ate them like crazy le…

Because this is my first year to have a garden, I started planting around May 15. That's when it rained for like a week or two. It was such a blessing!!!! All the plants set into the ground soo well, I was amazed. Only that after so much rain, silly…

My neighbor gave me some of these cages. Will see how the caged tomatoes will do versus the staked ones! Thanks for the wonderful pictures!

Thanks for the feedback, Joy! I think I did this in the begining, too much excitement of first garden, ha?! Whew, I ended up with the curled top, which I freaked out that it's the curled top virus, then cooled off with the watering and most of them…

WOW, thanks a lot Michelle, for the useful info. Silly me, I was wondering how come their stem didn't brake when some of my tomato plants fell on the ground and seemed just fine! :)

Hi again Roxana. Don't know the tomato diseases well; lost all my plants last year to a different type of virus. Just destroyed a plant showing the same disease damage before it got others. It was a heirloom cherry type, all the others are new (new to me) hybrids with all the letters for disease resistance in their names I could find. I do have lots of bugs to spread diseases. I also planted far away from any previous site for tomatoes. *sigh* I meant to do the roof over the plants as my German family said I had to do, but never got around to it...

Flea beetles on eggplant: I don't know what will work; I'm trying DE and BT then if that doesn't work, and the eggplants still alive, I'll try something stronger.

Hello again Roxana. I left explanations for all the questions left for that photo. Thank you for the comments. Good luck with juggling the garden and children. I look forward to hearing about it all!

Welcome Roxana to KGI! It's a bit addictive here. I've been gardening awhile, not always successfully. This year is my first year ever with chickens - five stupid little birds...
How big an area are you managing? Only the real summer will tell if I've bitten off more than I can chew once again. My DH is a gem, helps alot.

Hi Letti Thanks for the info about the contaminated manure. I have not bought manure now for several years in the UK. This was since we had the foot & mouth and BSE scares. I think that municipal compost is your best bet, if you need to say bulk up…

Hi Kirsti I think the dingy idea seems feasable. Then the plants would be out of the way of day to day activities. Have you seen Margy,s floating garden pictures. Yours would be a variation on that theme.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
