Hi Sandra. I noticed you were wondering what shallots are. They are small and oblong/elongated. They are like garlic, in that they form in clusters. Skin color varies, but is most often a golden brown. The flesh is off-white. They are firm and sweet, aromatic, and yet pungent, full of flavor. They're related to the onion, but are sweeter and milder. When slicing, they can make you cry, just like onions. Plant in early fall, harvest in mid-summer. Hope this helps.

Gnochi is where you boil whole potatoes - grate when cool - then add a couple of egg yolks and enough flour to make a soft dough. Do this while the potato is still warm. You then roll it out into a long thin sausage and cut into little sections then put into boiling water. When they float they are ready. Taste really nice-really easy to make also economical - serve with a pasta type sauce, salad etc

Hi Sandra. Hope you're enjoying this site. I left a note about your apple tree problem in the orchards group. I'll try to help. Best gardening wishes!

Reading what all persons are writing here, I've the impression, that you couldn't learn anything from me, perhaps something about milk sour fermentated products, like dark sour bred, or Sauerkraut. But I'd like to exchange mails with you too, you've a lot of kids, as I had. Where was your Grandpa from?

Sandra & Co. , I wish only the best for you and all those ''hard-heads.'' Someday in the future they will be glad to know how to grow their own food, They may not see it as ''cool'' today. But they will. good-luck.

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
