I'm very happy with the results of the SFG method in my 4 x 8 planting beds. We were too brave when we planted the pumpkin along the vertical trellis netting. Now we have giant pumpkins pulling very hard on the netting. Probably a smaller variety o…

I would certainly move my compost pile. Establishing a good relationship with your neighbor starting with this issue will likely benefit both of you in the future.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for doing this! Me and McPete below are doing the same thing but in different locations. It is becoming quite a popular endeavor and so necessary I think in these uncertain economic times. Also, when you hear the statistic that our average food travels 2,000 miles to get to our plate, backyard farming really does some good in preventing climate change. Go Backyard Gardening!! I'm in Santa Cruz too.

Hi! I'm in Santa Cruz, so I'm a neighbor!

wow, you removed your driveway! That's really cool.

I vermicompost too, should we start a group on that? I have alpacas so i have great compost too... (in fact I will let people come and take it away!)

Hi Sharon, McPete here, I am just now going into business with some pals doing bicycle delivered 4x4 and 4x8 raised beds here in Southern California. We install, maintain, and leave the harvest at your door. When the time comes we will use a biodiesel truck. My wife and I also run a Food Not Lawns group which replaces front lawns with veggie gardens, and we also assist schools and churches around here with garden installations. I hope you put up some photos of your garden beds, before and after would be cool to see. I just added a bunch of our garden tonight, have a look, McPete.

Hi Sharon.
Thanks for the efforts in finding a solution for my problem. I tried contacting my local town authority with the same question. Nobody in their office could advice me on this. Their excuse was that they were no gardeners themselves, and therefore they could not give any advice on this subject. I did get the distinct feeling that they found my questioning amusing and thought I was pulling their leg. Nevermind. I shall try to find out somehow.

Hi Sharon,
thanks for the encouraging coments on my garden. Since last year though I had not much time to keep up with it like before and it doesn`t look quite as tidy at the minute.
About the idea of growing veg in the front garden: I never received any tips or hints back, still don`t know if it`s safe to even harvest fume-infested produce. I shall try to experiment this coming year and stick a few plants out there, maybe just for show. As my front house wall faces south and gets very hot during summer I toyed with the idea of placing some tomatoes and aubergines infront of it. Not sure that I can actually eat the produce from there. The road is about 5 meters away and my garden is cut off from it by a wall that`s about 1 meter high. Traffic fumes from cars passing and busses waft about all day. I`m sceptic about food safety issues.

Hi Sharon - Wow, I am proud that you removed your driveway to put in some raised beds, you go girl! You will totally love gardening, just let you inner garden muse direct you. I like to stick with native plants as they require less care than fussy ornamentals - I really want a greenhouse and 2009 will be the year I will see this come to fruitation, come hell or high water! If you get a chance to go to my blog, have a peek around

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
