My first tomatoes have started to form :) Thanks everyone, fingers crossed that they ripen, our weather has turned wet and windy and the sun has decided to go elsewhere for the summer I fell.

I hope this come's out good for you! I like to do several batches at the same time but use different wine and ale yeasts, champagne yeast's tends to do well in fruit wines I find. Due to the long maturing times of most fruit wines and mead's this ...

I have just thinned my brussels sprouts (I kept them 2 to a patch until they looked strong) and wondered if the big leaves of the main stem are edible, and if so anyone got some recipes for them?

Yeah, Aphids were on the small new shoots, I have rubbed them off and used an organic natural spray that supposedly keeps the green fly horde at bay... I guess I will find out soon. I thought that rhubarb leaves were poisonous to bugs ???

That pot is pretty big. I now have leaves on the rhubarb that have red blotches on them!!! I seem to have a load of ants on the plant too, could they be causing damage?

My Tiny New Garden

I have moved into my new home and have inherited a very small rear garden that has lots of weeds and bushes. I have already cleared an area of dead or dying flowers and I plan to use that strip of dirt to grow something, but I don't know what yet.

Hopefully the people of this site can help and advise me on how to use this small area for veg growing.

The Rhubarb Monster!

As this is my first year growing food I keep getting over excited every time I go for a potter around the garden.
Today I found the first flowers opening on the potatoes, and the blueberries are starting to swell up. *excited grin*

Well I was looking over my old photos and just thought I would share my fave pudding ingredient, and the plant I have now dubbed The Rhubarb Monster! :P

When I got home with my rhubarb it was small lump in the dirt, I planted it into a large tub my g/f's parents had… Continue

How about cedar for some big, beautiful square pots? A few cedar planters will last a lifetime. Use copper nails and there's no chance of rust. And you can gap the planks ever so slightly and the soil will breathe better.

I built a large in-ground cedar planter for a friend last year, and I used carriage bolts at the corners so it could be broken down for storage.

Getting the seed catalogs in the mail is always my favorite Christmas present, if a taunting one. It's these last couple of months that drive me absolutely bonkers- since I live in the Great White North, I can't start cold crops until March, and hot crops in April. The wait is interminable. I usually start a sprouting jar in February, and I hate sprouts- taste like dirt to me. Just desperate for something fresh.

If you'll have it, I have one piece of advice for your small space- grow vertically. Seek out varieties that vine, and build frames for them (I'm thinking small melons, squash, beans, peas, tomatoes). A lot of plants that vine do better with support anyway- though they do need to be grown in biggest pots you can find or build. Your little garden is very sweet. What a beautiful start.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. On my photo page I added a pic of the coldframe opener and some info about how it works and where to get one.

I noticed that you are wondering what to plant in your new garden. Plant what you like to eat, if it grows where you live.

How cold does it get there? How hot in the summer? What is the length of your growing season? Once you can answer these questions then study seed catalogs for things that appeal to you.

I have lots of favorite seed companies, but they are all US. Ask people who live around where they get their seeds. I find that the old-timers have the best advice. They also are a great resource for local weather trends like last and first frost.

I noticed that you make beer. You should grow hops. It is an easy to grow, attractive, prolific vine.

Hello there! Thanks for the comments on my photos. I pickled the squash not knowing if I'd like it, but it's delicious! Not too tart, not too sweet!

If you'd like some advice about planting in your small space, I suggest you do a little research on square foot gardening or French Intensive gardening. Both styles promote the best/most productive use of small space. You'd be surprised how much you can plant in a square foot!
You should also look at Tamra Stallings page : http://my.kitchengardeners.org/profile/Tamra
Find out your planting zone if you don't already know it, and seek out advice from Tamra. She is a remarkable wealth of knowledge and experience. If anyone can get you on a good start, she can. Best of luck! I'll be looking forward to hearing how you do as the growing season arrives and progresses!

Hello there Snowshiva! Welcome to KGI. This really is a great place for gardeners, whether you're a beginner or a pro, whether you have 100 acre garden or a windowsill garden. There will be lots of people willing to answer your questions. Check out the forum discussions and browse through all the great photos! Browse through the members and leave comments on their pages. You'll make fast friends here. It has slowed down just a little, I think because of winter, but there are still lots of folks active for now. We have groups too, usually relative to a specific area. We have one for Kitchen Gardeners UK. You might want to check them out and consider joining. I like your photos. Can't wait to see what else you do with your garden space. Best of luck! and Welcome!

Hello Glenn, I sow seeds for tomatoes sometimes in September. The plants live for 2 years, but it is advisable to replace them after one year.

Hi Muhammad You have a great garden, the soil looks quite sandy, but it must be very fertile. If your tomatoes grow all year round, what time of year do you sow your seeds and how long do the plants live?
