Hi Kitty- I don't have an educated answer for you since I'm no expert at fermentation - just been doing it this way for years. Checked the temp on my cellar shelves and it's at 52F right now-- it's an old dirt-floor stone foundation cellar so the te…

Hi all - several questions about my sauerkraut in a jar method - Oops-- haven't been on for a while I guess! --I use regular canning jar lids and rings. I prefer wide-mouth jars. --I keep the jars in a cool cellar (temp? not sure, probably upper 40s…

Hi All - I've been making sauerkraut "by the jar" for years and it is SO easy and has never let me down. Recipe came from my sister. I use a kraut cutter to slice the cabbage thinly enough. Here's the method: --sterilize wide-mouth pt or qt canning…

Late blight has made it to my garden - at least to one of my three beds of tomatoes. How is everyone else looking? Today I pulled out three plants (an heirloom variety I was trying for the first time, Paul Robeson) and defoliated a bunch of others i…

Robin, I'm hoping your tomatoes avoid the blight - and mine (so far, so good, but I'm not resting easy) - Here's the MOFGA pest report from June that talks about how to recognize it: http://www.mofga.org/Publications/PestReports/PestReports2009/tabi

Hi Sue,
Thanks for your comment. They were actually surprisingly good for 5th graders. But oh, the din of it all. Sensory overload.

I saw from Beva's comment below that you went to bee school this spring. How did you like it? A group of neighborhood friends and I have just started beekeeping at a local farm, who are very pleased to have the "new farm workers" in residence. One of our group went to bee school, the rest are working out of books and local bee wisdom, such as it is in suburbia. I expect more of us will make time for bee school next spring, once we have a year of hands-on to guide our learning.

HI Sue!
Oh... I'd love to take a bee keeping class. I saw one advertised locally, and thought about it... but kinda hard where my husband is allergic to even think of that as a possibility. :(
I am still cutting up trees that fell on my garden from the ice storm. I have not planted a thing! I feel like I am so far behind! I did get to work outside more today before I had to leave to do a Medicine Wheel class. I taught a class last fall and the students gathered to paint prayer flags to hand in the Wheel. So, today we cleaned the Wheel and hung the prayer flags... they were beautiful fluttering in the breeze.
Isaac and I made our pine salve last night... and I took material from the area where the trees had to be cut up and made 6 more quarts.. so I'll have lot's of pine salve for everyone!
I did get a garden started in my front yard.. so I guess I have planted something... you can see it by looking at my blog. I am trying to down size my lawn!!
So, next I need to get my plants in the greenhouse going and my garden ready to plant! Now that I can see it!
:)

Ah-ha! I thought maybe! I really enjoyed them.
They had the caged bird in her dining room dancing and totally fawning over them. We all enjoyed them playing very much. I had my young friend with me, Isaac, and he commented to me on the way home, that it was so good to see a father and daughter who have so much to share.
Molly is a real cutie, and I think Isaac really wanted to talk to her, and she to him... but he is really pretty shy and quiet. They did talk a little, and he was happy to be with people of like mind.
He is a fine young man, and his job is merchant marine... but his passion is learning survival skills, how to live in harmony with the natural world and anything that is associated.
Isaac and I kayak in summer (now, for you to understand... I am not related.. Isaac was sent to me by a friend of mine who knew that my husband and I could understand and nurture his "organic" ways. His family does not understand what he is trying to accomplish.), I learn so much from him about plants and wildlife! When we kayak, he brings a backpack full of ID books.
We also invite him to do Inipi (Native American sweat lodge) and Medicine Wheel and drumming circles with our circle of friends.
But, getting back to John & Molly. After class, I approached John to chat with him, and he told me he works hospice. He said he was exploring frequencies to help people in passing over. So we talked about chakras and how each has a frequency. I told him that my husband builds flutes that are tuned to each chakra. I went and got the flute I had out in my car to show him. It's one of my "plain jane" ones.. my travel flute. So, we stood outside and played the flutes for a short while... to bad it was so damp and chilly!
My husband is making a new flute for me, that I would love to show them... it is that "chipper" sound that they both liked.
So, if you see them, please let them know, both Isaac and I enjoyed meeting them!! Perhaps one day we will meet again.
I am taking the next class that Karen is teaching. I like her very much. We met at a drumming circle in Dayton.
Well, off to work for me!
So good to hear from you... how is your garden?

Sue, I just finished reading your June 20 post in the Forum discussion, "Gardening Laments" and wanted to find out how your garden recovered during the remainder of the summer. Maybe you could post a blog and let us all know. You mentioned also some ideas you were having for a fall garden to fill in the empty spaces. How did your fall garden do?

Maybe you have already addressed this elsewhere. In that case, I guess I'll find out as I continue reading.

Not many could have experienced such devastation on such a large scale and have the stamina to return to it, not only to salvage, but to start again and get whatever you could from the remainder of the season, and to know without question that you will return to the garden year after year for as long as you are physically able.

I don't think it was just because you are a professional, or that you have been at it for over 30 years. Nor was it simply the knowledge and know-how of recovering.

Any challenge draws from us the best or the worst of our character and nature. I believe your true nature came forth in the disaster you faced. Courage. Commitment. Strength. The drive to overcome, not be overcome by circumstances. I admire you for that! Bravo!

The tidy bit comes from my partner he likes things organized in sections it works okay and with limited space I guess we have to have it pretty organized not rambly (if that is a word).
Gawler is a pretty town but it is very dry in summer. We have a couple of rivers in South Australia but not much water in them. I don't think I have seen water in the Gawler river.
Maine and Seattle look good places for water and Northern New South Wales and some of Queensland on our east coast have water, and are very lovely areas.

What lovely photos, I wish I lived there, I would help you. It is my dream to buy a huge old farmhouse in upstate NY and live the life of my dreams - I love my woods here in NJ but my house is way too small!

Hey Sue! Yikes! Did you send some colder air our way??? It was nice and almost 60 earlier today, and then the wind kicked into high gear! Still can't complain... no snow and it is mid-november!

I am hoping that the snow will stay away until after I have my husbands birthday party next Sunday! I have a girl from Portland coming and she plays the crystal bowls.. if you are familiar with Tibetan singing bowls, what she has is similar, only in crystal. She sings in Latin and 2-3 other languages... just a beautiful voice! We met her at a holistic fair this past spring. My husband hand makes wooden tuned flutes. She heard him playing one and they ended up doing a duet!
Stay warm!!!

These photos are beautiful, and all so interesting. I agree with Beva's comment below, on this website we get to see the gardens of the world. I also like seeing the architecture of the homes. Much hard work here. Worthy of praise!

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
