I've been getting a few ripe tomatoes. Had a couple tomato/bacon sandwiches with two globular heirlooms. Some of the plants were supposed to be Big Boy but turned out to be a small sauce tomato. Last year I bought mismarked plants too. Only one zucchini plant produced, and I've had 3 zucchini only. The others only produced male blossoms, not a female one on the plants. Now they've all got some sort of spots on their leaves. I have great herbs, however. And beets.

Believe me the self control took a while to come by. I pretty much started out with my "plan" and then took a few days to seriously think about what I could REALLY do. What types of seeds did you buy this year?

French Breakfast radish seeds are available from most seed outlets. I think I got these from Nichols Garden Nursery in Oregon. They have an online catalog.

Yes, this rain is amazing. My lettuce loves it, however. I just had a salad with the last of my radishes :-( and green onions, olive oil and red wine vinegar. Good stuff. My squash are just getting secondary leaves. The bush beans look great.

Don't worry about cross pollination unless you plan on saving the squash seeds. If you get strange squash it will be because the people you bought the seeds from didn't isolate their plants well enough. Cross pollination only manifests itself the NEXT year.

My garden looks really nice right now. A friend came by yesterday and we sat outside to visit and have a cold drink. It was really nice. My Gravenstein apple tree has lots of baby apples on it. I hope they make it.

I'm still eating French Breakfast radishes, but I just pulled up the row of other ones that were all going to tops and planted another variety of carrots from seeds my son picked up at the Farmer's Market. I may have better luck with them. Everything else seems to be growing ok. Some of my tomato plants were really "leggy" but they're still alive and I can see new growth. Just to be on a the "safe" side, I bought four beefsteak plants in case the two that died were a large variety. I wouldn't want a year of small variety tomatoes only.

Sounds like your garden is doing well. Sandy soil is supposed to be really good for strawberries. The natural soil in my yard is heavy clay, difficult to deal with, but I have imported soil in my garden beds. Next year i'm gong to have to get more to top them off and increase fertility. I have been eating French Breakfast radishes, but the "regular" radishes aren't making bulbs, looks like they're all going "tops" -- this happens almost every year and I don't understand why. Any clues?

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
