i've gardened underneath my grapes for several years now. mostly for the shade, since the direct sun kills pretty much everything we like to eat. the grape is north to south so on one side is morning and the other afternoon direct sunlight. favas…

I agree - I saw my sister's Phoenix water bill awhile back, broke down the numbers - she pays less than half what I do outside Atlanta. However, she doesn't do lawn - rocks and pockets of cactus stuff in front. Drip irrigation in their walled garden. Still, I couldn't get over the water issues they face and still pay half what I do per thousand gallons.

Welcome Richard. Beware, this site is kinda addicting! Have fun, share all your garden photos. Look at ours, make lots of comments. My sister gardens in Phoenix and the bragging on what's ready already is something! How did that first potato taste? Bet it was great.

Welcome Richard. I hope you have a good time here. I think it's a real blast, meeting so many people from so many places, with so much in common! Here's the inside scoop... leave lots of comments everywhere! Folks here like leaving, receiving, and reading everybody's comments. It's how we meet each other and make friends. Best gardening wishes! mwf

KG Day - Help us choose a date!

Kitchen Garden Day has traditionally been celebrated at the end of August which is a great time for gardens in temperate, northern climates but not a great time for many other gardeners around the world (e.g. August is winter in the southern hemisphere, monsoon season in India, too hot for many gardeners in southern states, etc.).

We're exploring the possibility of changing the date to the spring and would like your input. Please answer our poll here.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
