I haven't heard from you in a while. Is the weather improving in Vermont? We've had a few days above freezing. It's great. I moved rocks about yesterday preparing another small raised bed. I'm taking it slow . . .

I want to play in the dirt too. The basil and thyme seedlings are still alive, but haven't grown secondary leaves yet. We had another small skiff of snow overnight. I guess it's still winter. After the holidays are over, i'm ready for spring, but the weather won't comply with my wishes. I placed a good sized seed order with one company and yesterday I got an invoice that doesn't list my order and only one packet of bean seeds -- doesn't make sense, so I wrote to them on email and I got an electronic neutral response. I do hope the rest of the order arrives or I get a refund.

I'm hoping to finally get some horseradish going. I've made two attempts at this house. One planting never grew; the other died of neighbor pesticide. Those neighbors have moved, so maybe I have a chance now along that fence.

yes, it's been cold here. we had a few days of warmer weather and most of the snow melted. it felt like a false spring. i'm ready for the real spring. i ordered seeds. i also planted some thyme and basil in a window pot -- and they just came up!!! i hope i don't kill the tender plants.

The flowers are really pretty. Thanks. I just got back from spending the weekend with my mother for her birthday -- she just turned 86. Thankfully the weather cooperated and the highway was clear and dry both ways -- three hour drive one way. After New Years I am ready for winter to be over, but there's a long way to go.

Thanks for the flowers. I have to remember that little trick. Did you take the photo yourself?

All my seed catalogs are in a pile waiting for me to look through. I need to place orders soon b/c I will start early spring plantings under lights in my garage in about a month.

I have two floor looms and I weave shawls (like the blue one in the photo) and ruanas, little jackets, and cotton tea towels. I've been researching Algo-Saxon clothing styles lately, or any European clothing in the Iron Age. As usual, I'm finding the church upset with women for wearing anything fancy -- I guess the priests wanted all the pretty stuff to wear during mass.

I am going to plan more bush beans this year since they did really well last year in my raised beds. I was hoping pole beans would do well to save space, but I've tried three varieties for 3 years now, and I'm not impressed. I will try some in a different location, however, just in case.

Hi Summer rain,
I have been thru your town a couple of times... I used to drop off mechanical equipment for repairs at a place in White River Jct. It was several years ago, and I don't remember the name of the place, and they sold out to a bigger business and moved to MA.
I remember there was a farm stand outside the town that sold maple syrup, honey and such. We always stopped to see what they had.

Hi! So glad you joined the Kitchen Herbalist group! I would love to someday see Vermont and I long to see Ireland, all the green my eyes can stand and then the lore and romance of faeries and castles, *sigh*
I have many fur children also - I am waiting for a litter of Cocker Spaniels to be born in the next day or two, I am a nervous Nellie though I have been through this many times - each time is unique. I love my dogs so very much, and my cats too!

High acid fruits and pickles can be preserved in some of these non-standard jars/bottles, but I wouldn't trust low acid foods like string beans, etc., or anything that should be processed in a pressure canner. Jams and jellies used to be preserved...

I have seen the really young kale leaves in salad mixes, but I prefer it cooked. Unlike collards and mustards, that need several hard freezes to sweeten up, kale does not. But at the same time it is the most cold hardy of all the greens. Last year...
